Midnight Galaxy Butterfly Charm Free Crochet Pattern

Midnight galaxy butterfly charm

# Midnight Galaxy Butterfly Charm Free Crochet Pattern

Okay, this little one is pure magic. I had a skein of galaxy-variegated yarn — deep midnight blues and purples with those tiny starry flecks — sitting on my shelf for months, and it kept whispering “butterfly” every time I walked past. So I finally sat down and turned it into the sweetest little bag charm: four fluttery wings, a soft little body, and a gold clasp so it can live on your keys, your purse, or your backpack.

Each wing takes about 15 minutes, so you can stitch the whole charm in one evening. If you have made a simple amigurumi ball before, you already have every skill you need — it is all single crochet in continuous rounds with basic increases and decreases.

What You’ll Need

  • Sport weight or DK weight cotton yarn in galaxy variegated (midnight blue, purple, black with star flecks), approximately 25 yards
  • Small amount of black yarn for the body, approximately 8 yards
  • 2.25 mm or 2.5 mm crochet hook (go down one or two sizes from the yarn label recommendation for tight amigurumi fabric)
  • Stitch marker
  • Yarn needle
  • Small amount of polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Gold lobster clasp with chain and 2 jump rings
  • Small sharp scissors

Finished size:

  • Each wing approximately 1.75 inches tall
  • Body approximately 2 inches long
  • Complete charm approximately 3.5 inches including the chain

The Pattern

inc = increase (2 sc in the same stitch). dec = invisible decrease (through front loops only). Work in continuous rounds unless stated; use your stitch marker to track round beginnings.

Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) repeat around. (24 sts)

Round 5: (Sc 3, inc) repeat around. (30 sts)

Round 6: (Sc 4, inc) repeat around. (36 sts)

Round 7: (Sc 5, inc) repeat around. (42 sts)

Do not stuff. Flatten the wing and sl st across the opening to close it flat (6 sl sts). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Lower Wings (make 2)

Work exactly as the upper wings through Round 9 (42 sts), then continue:

Round 10: (Sc 4, dec) repeat around. (30 sts)

Round 11: (Sc 3, dec) repeat around. (24 sts)

Round 12: (Sc 2, dec) repeat around. (18 sts)

Round 13: (Sc 1, dec) repeat around. (12 sts)

Flatten and close as for the upper wings. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Body

With black yarn.

Round 1: Magic ring, 6 sc into ring, pull tight. (6 sts)

Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)

Rounds 3–7: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)

Round 8: (Sc 4, dec) repeat around. (10 sts)

Round 9: (Sc 3, dec) repeat around. (8 sts)

Stuff the body lightly with fiberfill.

Round 10: (Sc 2, dec) repeat around. (6 sts)

Round 11: Dec 3 times around. (3 sts)

Sl st to next st, fasten off, and cinch the tail closed. Weave in the end.

Antennae

Cut two 6-inch lengths of black yarn. Thread one length through the top of the head, knot it, and trim to about 1 inch. Add a tiny French knot (wrap the yarn around your needle 2 to 3 times before pulling through) at the tip of each antenna for the little knobs.

Assembly

1. Sew the two upper wings to the top sides of the body, and the two lower wings just below them, slightly overlapping the upper wings for that layered look.

2. Take a few small stitches through the center of the body to cinch it gently — this makes the wings lift and gives the butterfly dimension.

3. Attach a jump ring through the top stitches of the head.

4. Attach the second jump ring to your gold chain, connect the wing assembly, and finish with the lobster clasp.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Keep your stitches tight — amigurumi fabric should have no gaps where stuffing can peek through. Go down a hook size if it looks loose.
  • Let the galaxy yarn do the talking: work both upper wings from the same part of the color repeat so they match.
  • Not into bag charms? Add a ribbon loop instead of the chain and it becomes a sweet ornament or rearview-mirror flutter.

Flutter on, little butterfly — you are going to get compliments everywhere you land!
