# Sunset Ombre Butterfly Bloom Charm Free Crochet Pattern

I am a little bit obsessed with this one. A butterfly charm that fades from golden yellow through coral to dusky purple — like the sky does right before the stars come out. I clipped mine to my project bag and I catch people staring at it at the yarn shop. Every. Single. Time.

It works up in one evening with ombre or variegated yarn doing all the color magic for you — no yarn changes, no ends to weave in from stripes. The wings are just simple double crochet fans, the body is a tiny tube, and two little antennae finish it off. Clip it to a bag, a keyring, or hang it from your rearview mirror.

What You’ll Need

  • DK or light worsted (#3) ombre/variegated yarn in sunset tones (yellow, coral, purple) — about 30 yards
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Small amount of dark brown yarn for the body
  • 1 split keyring or lobster clasp
  • Tapestry needle
  • Small amount of fiberfill (optional)

Finished size:

  • Approximately 3.5 inches wide (wingtip to wingtip) and 3 inches tall, not counting the keyring

The Pattern

Make two wings, one body, and two antennae. US crochet terms.

Wings (make 2)

With the ombre yarn:

Chain 4, join to form a ring.

Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as DC), 11 DC into the ring, join. (12 DC)

Round 2: Chain 3, DC in same stitch, *2 DC in next stitch*, repeat around, join. (24 DC)

Round 3 (scalloped edge): Chain 1, *(SC in next stitch, skip 1 stitch, 5 DC in next stitch, skip 1 stitch)*, repeat around, join. (6 scallops)

Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail for sewing.

Body

With dark brown yarn:

Chain 9.

Row 1: SC in second chain from hook and each chain across, chain 1, turn. (8 SC)

Rows 2–3: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn. (8 SC)

Fold the strip in half lengthwise and whipstitch the long edges together to form a small tube. Fasten off.

Antennae (make 2)

With dark brown yarn, chain 10, slip stitch in second chain from hook and each chain across. Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Assembly

1. Sew the two wings together at their inner edges, overlapping slightly, so the scalloped edges face outward.

2. Sew the body tube vertically down the center where the wings meet.

3. Sew one antenna to the top of the body, curling the ends slightly.

4. Attach the split ring or lobster clasp to the top of the body with a few firm stitches.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Ombre yarn does the sunset fade for you, but if you only have solids, work Round 1 in yellow, Round 2 in coral, and Round 3 in purple — same gorgeous effect.
  • A tiny pinch of fiberfill in the body tube keeps it from flattening in your bag. Totally optional, but I like it.
  • Make a second one in ocean blues and give the pair as a gift — they take less than an hour each once you’ve made the first.

Clip it on, show it off, and enjoy every sunset-colored flutter!
