# Plaid Santa Mug Wrap Free Crochet Pattern

Red plaid crocheted Santa mug wrap with black belt and white fur trim

If Santa wore flannel, this would be it. A rich red plaid wrap with Santa’s black belt, a golden buckle, and the fluffiest white fur trim along the edges — this mug wrap is pure Christmas morning. It looks like a bigger project than it is: the plaid is just smart color changes, the belt is a simple strip, and the fur trim hides a multitude of sins (my favorite kind of trim).

What you’ll need

  • Worsted weight (#4) yarn:
  • Red — 60 yds
  • Dark Red — 60 yds
  • Black — 70 yds
  • Yellow — 10 yds
  • White fur yarn — 20 yds
  • H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle and scissors
  • Gauge: 8 sc x 8 rows = 2″
  • Finished size: approx 12.25″ x 3.75″

Pattern notes: Worked flat in rows, mostly single crochet. Check your gauge so the wrap hugs your mug properly.

The pattern

The plaid band:

Chain 31 (this gives you 30 stitches). Work Row 1 in single crochet, then work Rows 2–10 in the plaid pattern, alternating Red and Dark Red to weave the classic check. The color changes do all the visual work here — the stitches stay simple.

The shaped edges:

Rows 12–30 shape the wrap, gently narrowing toward each end so it sits neatly on the mug. In Row 21, work a ch-5 buttonhole so the wrap can close around the handle side. Try it on your mug as you go and adjust if needed.

The fur trim:

With the white fur yarn, work 36 stitches of trim along each long edge of the wrap. The fluff frames the plaid beautifully and gives it that Santa-coat feel.

The belt:

With Black, chain 31 (30 stitches) and work a straight strip for the belt. For the buckle, chain 14, join into a ring with Yellow, and sew it onto the center of the belt. Then sew the whole belt across the middle of the plaid wrap.

A few tips from my hook

  • Carry your plaid colors loosely up the side rather than cutting and rejoining every row — fewer ends to weave in later.
  • Fur yarn eats stitches for breakfast, so count by feel and don’t stress about seeing each loop.
  • The buttonhole placement matters: test the wrap on your actual mug before you commit to sewing on the button.

Wrap it around a big festive mug, add cocoa, and hand it to someone you love. Instant Christmas magic. Happy hooking!
