Vase of crocheted poinsettia stems

Real poinsettias are gorgeous for exactly two weeks and then… well, we don’t talk about what happens next. But THESE poinsettias? They bloom forever, they never drop a leaf on your carpet, and the cat can’t poison herself chewing on them. Win, win, win!

I make the blooms big and full on long, sturdy stems, and then I use them absolutely everywhere — a tall vase on the sideboard, tucked into the Christmas tree, a few stems laid along the mantel garland. Once you learn the basic bloom, you’ll find a dozen places around your house begging for one.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in red, green, and gold
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • 12-inch floral wire or wooden dowels (optional, for extra-sturdy poseable stems)
  • Fiberfill (a pinch per bloom)

Finished size: Each bloom measures approximately 6 inches across on a 12-inch stem.

The Pattern

Worked in US crochet terms. Make as many stems as you like — I think they look best in odd numbers!

Outer Petals (make 8 per bloom)

With red, chain 12.

Side A: SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 3 chains, TR in next 3 chains, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain.

Side B: TR in next 3 chains, DC in next 3 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, SC in last chain. Join, fasten off with a tail. Each petal is about 3.5 inches long.

Inner Petals (make 6 per bloom)

With red, chain 9. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 2 chains, TR in next 2 chains, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain, then mirror along the other side: TR in next 2, DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in last. Join, fasten off with a tail.

Leaves (make 3 per stem)

With green, chain 11. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 4 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, (HDC, chain 2, HDC) in last chain, then mirror along the other side. Join, fasten off with a tail.

Center

With gold, make a magic ring, chain 1, 10 SC into the ring, join. (10 SC)

Round 2: *SC in next stitch, (chain 3, 3-DC bobble in same stitch, chain 3, slip stitch in next stitch)* — repeat 5 times for 5 berries. Fasten off with a tail.

Stem

With green, make a magic ring, chain 1, 6 SC into the ring. (6 SC)

Rounds 2–40: SC in each stitch around. (6 SC per round)

This makes a tube about 12 inches long. If you’re using floral wire or a dowel, slide it inside now — it makes the stems poseable. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Assembly (per stem)

1. Sew the 8 outer petals into a full circle, overlapping the bases. Add a tiny pinch of fiberfill behind the center for loft.

2. Sew the 6 inner petals on top, offset between the outer petals.

3. Stitch the gold berry center firmly into the middle.

4. Sew the bloom to the top of the stem tube, stitching through several rounds so it sits straight.

5. Sew the 3 leaves along the stem at different heights, angled outward. Weave in all ends.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Vary your stem lengths by working fewer rounds (try 30 or 35) — a bouquet with mixed heights looks so much more natural in a vase.
  • A drop of hot glue inside the stem top before sewing the bloom on gives it rock-solid staying power.
  • Beyond the vase: lay stems along your mantel, tuck single blooms into your tree branches, or tie three together with ribbon for a swag.

Fill every vase in the house — December deserves flowers that last!
