Pink Cherry Blossom Butterfly Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

Pink cherry blossom butterfly cardigan

# Pink Cherry Blossom Butterfly Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

This cardigan started as a doodle in my sketchbook: what if the yoke of a cardigan was shaped like butterfly wings? A few swatches later, it was real, and it’s somehow even prettier than I imagined. Soft pink fabric, wing-shaped yoke panels that flutter open at the front, and delicate cherry blossom appliqués scattered like petals in the wind.

It’s an open-front cardigan, so there’s no button band to fuss with — just drape and go. The construction is all rectangles and simple shaping, and the blossoms are quick little flowers you’ll want to put on everything.

Butterfly cardigan flat lay

I chose a blush pink acrylic with a hint of sheen because it photographs like a dream and feels like a hug. The blossoms are a slightly deeper pink so they pop without shouting.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight acrylic yarn in blush pink (approx. 700 yards)
  • Small amount of worsted yarn in deep pink and yellow for the blossoms
  • Size H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

Finished size:

  • Adult S–M: bust 40 inches (open front), length 24 inches, sleeve 17 inches

Assembly

Seam the shoulder tops of the front panels to the back panel. Sew one wing panel to each front, wide edge at the shoulder tapering toward the center front — the wings overlap slightly at the neckline like a butterfly at rest.

Fold sleeves in half lengthwise, seam, center on the body sides 7 inches below the shoulders, and attach. Seam the body sides and underarms.

Edging: Join blush pink at the bottom of one front edge. Work SC evenly up the front, around the neck (easing the wing edges in), and down the other front — about 110 SC total. Work 2 more rows of SC for a soft rolled edge. Fasten off.

Cherry Blossoms (make 10–12)

With deep pink, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 10 SC into the ring, join. (10 SC)

Round 2: *Ch 2, work 2 DC in the next stitch, Ch 2, slip stitch in the next stitch,* repeat 5 times for 5 petals. Fasten off.

With yellow, embroider 3 tiny straight stitches in the center of each blossom.

Sew the blossoms scattered across the wing panels and upper back — I clustered 4 on each wing and sprinkled the rest. Weave in all ends.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Pin the wing panels in place and try the cardigan on before sewing — wing placement is everything.
  • The open front means fit is forgiving; when in doubt, go with the flow.
  • Leftover blossoms make the prettiest gift tags — just add a string.

Float through your day like the butterfly you are!
