# Ocean Waves Fairy Dress Free Crochet Pattern
I sketched this dress on a beach trip years ago, watching the water fade from deep navy at the horizon to seafoam where it met the sand — and my niece took one look at the first swatch and declared it a sea fairy’s dress. The name stuck, and honestly, she was right. The ombre flows from midnight navy through teal and seafoam down to cream, and the handkerchief hem moves like water when you walk.
This is an advanced-intermediate project, no sugarcoating it: a fitted wave-stitch bodice, a lace shell skirt in five ombre colors, and eight pointed handkerchief panels. But every step is logical once you see how it builds, and I will walk you through all of it. Plan for a slow, happy few weeks — this one is a labor of love.

What You’ll Need
- DK weight yarn (CYCA #3), approximately 1,800 to 2,200 yards (1,645 to 2,012 m) total, in five colors:
- Color A (Navy): 550 yards (503 m)
- Color B (Teal): 450 yards (411 m)
- Color C (Seafoam): 400 yards (366 m)
- Color D (Mint): 300 yards (274 m)
- Color E (Off-White / Cream): 250 yards (229 m)
- I recommend a smooth cotton DK (Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK is my pick) — crisp stitch definition for the waves and beautiful drape for the lace. Avoid fuzzy or textured yarns.
- US size E-4 / 3.5 mm hook (bodice)
- US size F-5 / 3.75 mm hook (skirt lace)
- Tapestry needle, at least 8 stitch markers, measuring tape, scissors, blocking mats and rust-proof pins
Finished size:
- Written for size Medium. Bust 34 in (86 cm) — fits 32 to 34 in (81 to 86 cm) with slight negative ease
- Waist 28 in (71 cm)
- Hip at top of skirt flare 38 in (97 cm)
- Total length shoulder to longest hem point 48 in (122 cm)
- Bodice length shoulder to waist 14 in (35.5 cm)
- Skirt waist to shortest hem point 24 in (61 cm)
- Waist to longest handkerchief point 34 in (86 cm)
- Straps adjustable, approximately 10 to 14 in (25 to 35 cm)
Gauge:
- Bodice (E-4 hook, color A, wave stitch): 18 sts × 12 rows = 4 × 4 in (10 × 10 cm)
- Skirt (F-5 hook, lace shell pattern, after blocking): 16 sts × 8 rows = 4 × 4 in (10 × 10 cm)
- Swatch in pattern, not in plain sc — and block the skirt swatch

The Pattern
Stitch guide: ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sk = skip, st(s) = stitch(es), sp = space. Sc2tog = single crochet 2 together. In the skirt, ch 3 at the start of a round counts as the first dc; in the bodice, ch 1 turns do not count as a stitch. Change colors between rounds only: finish the last stitch of the old color until 2 loops remain, then draw the new color through.
Ombre color sequence (skirt):
Rounds 1–8: A (Navy) ·
Rounds 9–16: B (Teal) ·
Rounds 17–24: C (Seafoam) ·
Rounds 25–32: D (Mint) · Rounds 33–48 and panels: E (Cream).
Front Bodice Panel
Worked flat from the neckline down. The wave stitch is worked over a multiple of 14 stitches plus 2 edge stitches.
Foundation: With A and the E-4 hook, ch 73. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (72 sc)
**Wave
Row 1 (RS):** Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, [sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, sk 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] 5 times, sc in last st. (72 sts — the 2 increases and 2 skipped stitches in each repeat balance out)
**Wave
Row 2 (WS):** Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (72 sc)
Rows 3–42: Repeat Wave Rows 1 and 2 twenty more times. (72 sts each row)
Checkpoint: The panel should measure about 14 inches (35.5 cm) tall and 16 inches (40.5 cm) wide.
Row 43 (waist shaping): Ch 1, turn. [Sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts] 9 times. (63 sts)
Rows 44–48: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (63 sc each row)
Fasten off.
Back Bodice Panel
Work exactly like the front panel through Row 48 (no neckline shaping on the back). (63 sts)
Side Seams and Straps
Hold the panels with right sides together. With A and the E-4 hook, sl st-seam each side edge starting at the waist and working upward for about 10 inches (25.5 cm), leaving the top 4 inches (10 cm) open on each side for armholes. Turn right side out. The waist opening is 126 sts around.
Straps (make 2): With A, ch 50.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (49 sc)
Rows 2–3: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Sew one strap to each front top corner and the matching back top corner, adjusting length to fit (about 11 inches is a good starting point).
Neckline edging: Join A at a back corner, ch 1, sc evenly around the entire neckline opening, join with sl st. Fasten off.
Skirt
Work in joined rounds from the waist down. Switch to the F-5 hook.
Round 1: Join A at the waist seam. Ch 3 (counts as dc), [dc in next 6 sts, 2 dc in next st] 18 times, join with sl st to top of ch-3. (144 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc. (144 sc)
Round 3 (shell round): Ch 1, [sc in first st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st (shell made), sk 2 sts] 24 times, join with sl st to first sc. (24 shells)
Round 4 (anchor round): Ch 1, sc in each st around (1 sc in each dc and each sc), join with sl st to first sc. (144 sc)
Rounds 5–8: Repeat Rounds 3 and 4 twice. Change to B at the end of Round 8.
Round 9 (shell round, first increase): Ch 1, [sc in first st, sk 2 sts, 7 dc in next st, sk 2 sts] 24 times, join. (24 shells of 7 dc)
Round 10 (anchor round): Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (192 sc)
Rounds 11–16: Repeat Rounds 9 and 10 three times. Change to C at the end of Round 16.
Round 17 (shell round, second increase): Ch 1, [sc in first st, sk 2 sts, 9 dc in next st, sk 2 sts] 24 times, join. (24 shells of 9 dc)
Round 18 (anchor round): Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (240 sc)
Rounds 19–24: Repeat Rounds 17 and 18 three times. Change to D at the end of Round 24.
Rounds 25–32: Repeat Rounds 17 and 18 four times. Change to E at the end of Round 32.
Rounds 33–48: Repeat Rounds 17 and 18 eight times.
Checkpoint: The skirt should measure about 24 inches (61 cm) from the waist to the shortest edge. Do not fasten off.
Handkerchief Panels (Make 8)
The 240 stitches divide into 8 panels of 30 sts. Work each panel separately, back and forth.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 29 sts (leave the rest unworked). Turn. (30 dc)
Rows 2–5: Ch 3, dc in each st across. Turn. (30 dc each row)
Row 6: Ch 3, dc2tog, dc in next 24 sts, dc2tog, dc in last st. Turn. (28 dc)
Rows 7–18: Repeat Row 6, decreasing 2 sts every row. (26, 24, 22 … 4 dc)
Row 19: Ch 3, dc2tog twice. Turn. (2 sts)
Row 20: Ch 2, dc2tog. Fasten off and weave in the tail. (1 st — the point)
Rejoin E at the next unworked stitch of Round 48 and repeat for all 8 panels. Each finished point should measure about 10 inches (25.5 cm) from where the panels begin.
Finishing
Weave in every end (there will be a few — put on a good podcast). Wet-block the skirt: soak briefly in cool water, squeeze gently in a towel, pin each of the 8 points out on blocking mats so the lace opens fully, and let dry completely. Steam or mist the bodice lightly and shape it flat. The blocking is what turns the lace from “nice” into “sea fairy.”
Sophie’s Tips
- Work the bodice a touch tighter than feels natural — the wave stitch needs to be firm enough to carry the weight of that big ombre skirt without stretching out.
- Keep the skirt lace loose and even; if your shells are tight, the blocking can’t open them up and you’ll lose all that airy wave movement.
- Mark the start of each panel with a stitch marker before you begin the handkerchief section — counting 30-stitch panels twice beats frogging a pointed hem once.
May your hem always catch the breeze — happy crocheting, friend!
