The Wrap Me Up Dress

Oh my goodness, I have been dreaming about this dress since the first frost hit. The Wrap Me Up Dress is the kind of holiday outfit that makes you feel instantly festive — it has those thick, charming straps that remind me of cute little suspenders, and the whole thing wraps around you like a cozy hug. The vertical ribbon detail down the front is what really steals the show, though. I wore my red version to our neighborhood cookie exchange and got asked about it three separate times!

It is worked in basic crochet stitches, so if you can double crochet, you can absolutely make this. The wrap style is wonderfully forgiving on fit, which means no stressing over exact sizing during the busiest season of the year.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in your main color (I used about 1,100 yards of a rich cranberry red)
  • Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • 3 yards of 1.5-inch satin ribbon in a coordinating color
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Finished size:

  • Approximately 34–38 inch bust, 28 inch waist, and 36 inches long from shoulder to hem
  • The wrap front adjusts to fit

The Pattern

Back Bodice

Chain 62. Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook and in each chain across. (60 DC)

Rows 2–20: Chain 3 (counts as first DC), DC in each stitch across, turn. (60 DC)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Front Panels (Make 2)

Chain 36. Double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook and in each chain across. (34 DC)

Rows 2–14: Chain 3, DC in each stitch across, turn. (34 DC)

Now we shape the neckline on one edge. Starting at the row 15, work across the first 28 stitches only, leaving the last 6 stitches unworked.

Row 15: Chain 3, DC in the next 27 stitches, turn. (28 DC)

Row 16: Chain 3, DC2tog, DC in each stitch across, turn. (27 DC)

Row 17: Chain 3, DC in each stitch across to the last 3 stitches, DC2tog, DC in the last stitch, turn. (26 DC)

Row 18: Chain 3, DC2tog, DC in each stitch across, turn. (25 DC)

Row 19: Chain 3, DC in each stitch across, turn. (25 DC)

Fasten off. Repeat for the second front panel, mirroring the neckline shaping on the opposite edge.

Skirt

Join yarn with a slip stitch at the bottom corner of the back bodice waist edge. We will work the skirt in joined rounds around the entire waist.

Round 1: Chain 1, single crochet evenly around the full waist edge (back bodice plus both front panels), working about 140 SC total. Join with a slip stitch to the first SC.

Rounds 2–4: Chain 3 (counts as DC), DC in each stitch around, join. (140 DC)

Round 5: Chain 3, *DC in the next 13 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (150 DC)

Rounds 6–8: DC in each stitch around, join. (150 DC)

Round 9: Chain 3, *DC in the next 14 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (160 DC)

Rounds 10–12: DC in each stitch around, join. (160 DC)

Round 13: Chain 3, *DC in the next 15 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (170 DC)

Rounds 14–16: DC in each stitch around, join. (170 DC)

Round 17: Chain 3, *DC in the next 16 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (180 DC)

Rounds 18–24: DC in each stitch around, join. (180 DC)

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Straps (Make 2)

Chain 56. Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. (55 SC)

Rows 2–4: Chain 1, SC in each stitch across, turn. (55 SC)

Fasten off. These thick little straps are what give the dress that adorable suspenders-inspired look.

Assembly

1. Seam the bodice side edges together with the tapestry needle, leaving the top 8 inches of each front panel open so the wrap can cross over.

2. Sew the bottom edge of the bodice to the top of the skirt round, easing evenly all the way around.

3. Sew one strap to the top front corner of each front panel and the other ends to the back bodice, crossing them in back for extra support if you like.

4. Ribbon detail: Thread the satin ribbon vertically through the front posts of the double crochet stitches on each front panel, running from the neckline to the waist. Tie the ribbon ends into a bow at the waist on each side.

Sophie’s Tips

  • The wrap style means you can overlap the front panels more or less for a custom fit — I overlap mine a full 4 inches for extra coziness.
  • Block the bodice pieces before seaming. It makes the ribbon threading so much smoother and the neckline shaping sits perfectly.
  • Try this in deep forest green with gold ribbon for a totally different holiday mood — same pattern, brand new dress.

Now go wrap yourself up in something wonderful — and save me a dance at the Christmas party!
