# Sunset Ombre Granny Tote Free Crochet Pattern
A whole sunset you can carry. This tote fades from deep coral through peach to pale gold in classic granny squares — the ombre layout does all the work, and the crochet itself is the simplest square in the book. I made mine for a weekend market trip and came home with compliments instead of just vegetables.
Thirty squares in five sunset shades, joined in a gradient order I’ll map out for you. If you can crochet one granny square, you can make this entire bag.

Five shades from deep coral to pale gold, and the gradient just flows. This is the project that finally used up all those half-skeins of warm colors.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted-weight yarn in 5 sunset shades: deep coral, coral, peach, light peach, pale gold (approx. 120 yards each)
- Worsted-weight yarn in cream for joining (approx. 200 yards)
- Size H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
Finished size:
- Approximately 15 inches wide and 13 inches tall, not including handles

The Pattern
Granny Square (make 30 — 6 of each sunset shade)
With your square color, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as DC), work 2 DC into the ring, Ch 2, *work 3 DC into the ring, Ch 2,* repeat 3 times, join. (4 clusters, 4 corners)
Round 2: Slip stitch to the first corner. Ch 3, (2 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC) in the corner, *Ch 1, (3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC) in the next corner,* repeat around, Ch 1, join.
Round 3: Slip stitch to the first corner. Ch 3, (2 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC) in the corner, *Ch 1, 3 DC in the next Ch-1 space, Ch 1, (3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC) in the next corner,* repeat around, Ch 1, join. Fasten off.
Each square measures about 4.5 inches.
Ombre Layout and Assembly
Each panel is 5 squares wide × 3 tall (15 squares per panel, 2 panels). For the sunset effect, order the shades diagonally:
Row 1: pale gold, light peach, peach, coral, deep coral.
Row 2: light peach, peach, coral, deep coral, pale gold.
Row 3: peach, coral, deep coral, pale gold, light peach. The diagonal shift blends the shades seamlessly so it reads as a sunset instead of stripes.
Join each panel with cream whipstitch, then join the panels along the sides and bottom. Add a crocheted base rectangle in deep coral (Ch 46, 14 rows of 45 SC).
Top edging: Join cream and work 3 rounds of SC around the top opening (about 88 SC per round). Fasten off.
Handles (make 2)
With deep coral, Ch 10. Work 70 rows of SC across 9 stitches. Fasten off with long tails. Sew to the top edge 4 inches from each side with reinforced square-and-X stitching.
Weave in all ends.
Sophie’s Tips
- The diagonal shade shift is what makes it read as a sunset instead of stripes — follow the layout exactly.
- Photograph your layout before joining; warm shades blur together after a while.
- Deep coral handles ground the gradient — light handles would look lost.
Carry the golden hour with you — this tote is pure warmth!
