Sunflower garden headpiece

# Sunflower Garden Crochet Headpiece Free Crochet Pattern

Festival season is my favorite crafting season, and this sunflower headpiece is the reason why. Bright yellow petals, happy green leaves, all on a comfortable crocheted band that actually stays put — I’ve danced in mine for hours and it never budged. It’s also perfect for garden parties, outdoor concerts, and photos among the flowers.

Each sunflower is its own little project, so this is ideal for using up yellow scraps. Make the band one evening, the flowers the next, and assemble on the third — or power through it all in one happy afternoon.

Headpiece flat lay

I used a soft cotton for the band so it’s comfortable against the forehead, and the flowers are slightly stiff acrylic so the petals hold their shape. Mix and match — that’s the beauty of a stash project.

What You’ll Need

  • DK-weight cotton yarn in green for the band (approx. 100 yards)
  • Worsted-weight yarn in yellow (approx. 150 yards) and brown (small amount) for the flowers
  • Size G-6 (4.0 mm) and H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hooks
  • Tapestry needle

Finished size:

  • Band fits heads 20–23 inches around
  • Adjust the starting chain to fit. Each sunflower measures about 3 inches across

The Pattern

Band

With green and the G hook, Ch 68 (for 21-inch head; add or subtract 4 chains per inch).

Row 1: SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, Ch 1, turn. (67 SC)

Rows 2–4: SC in each stitch across, Ch 1, turn. (67 SC)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Overlap the short ends by 1 inch and sew together firmly — this sits at the back of the head.

Sunflowers (make 5)

With brown and the H hook, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 10 SC into the ring, join. (10 SC)

Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 SC in each stitch around, join. (20 SC) Fasten off brown.

Join yellow in any stitch.

Round 3 (petals): *Ch 6, slip stitch in the 2nd chain from the hook, SC in the next chain, HDC in the next 2 chains, DC in the last chain, skip 1 stitch of the brown center, slip stitch in the next stitch,* repeat around — 10 petals total. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Leaves (make 6)

With green and the G hook, Ch 10.

Row 1: SC in the 2nd chain, HDC in the next 2, DC in the next 3, HDC in the next 2, work 3 SC in the last chain; now working down the other side of the chain, HDC in the next 2, DC in the next 3, HDC in the next 2, SC in the last, join. Fasten off with a tail.

Assembly

Arrange the 5 sunflowers across the front half of the band, slightly overlapping, with leaves tucked between them. I like a gentle arc: tallest in the center, smaller toward the sides. Sew each flower and leaf securely through the band with the tapestry needle. Weave in all ends.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Sew the flowers on while the band is around something head-shaped (a balloon works!) so the spacing looks right when worn.
  • A tiny stitch of brown in each petal base keeps the petals from flopping forward.
  • Make a second one in white daisies — same pattern, totally different vibe.

Bloom bright and dance happy — this one’s pure sunshine!
