# Jingle Bells Mug Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Okay, this one might be my favorite kind of extra: a mug cozy with actual jingle bells on it. Every time you lift your mug, you get the tiniest little jingle — tell me that’s not the most festive thing ever. The body is worked in extended single crochet, which gives it this beautiful subtle texture, and the red shell edging finishes it off like a little holiday dress.
What you’ll need
- Hoooked Soft Cotton DK (#3, 91 yds / 83 m per 50 g):
- Seattle Jade — 31.2 yds (28.5 m)
- Naples Red — 11 yds (10 m)
- US G (4 mm) crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- 1 button, 0.78″ (2 cm)
- Optional: 7 jingle bells, 8–10 mm
- Gauge: 4 esc x 3 rows = 1″ (esc = extended single crochet)
- Finished size: approx 10″ x 2.75″ — fits a mug about 10.5″ (26.6 cm) around and 3.75″ (9.5 cm) tall
Pattern notes: The cozy is worked sideways, so the foundation row sets the height and the rows build the length. This is one where gauge genuinely matters, so check it — the cozy needs to hug your mug, not swim on it.
The pattern
The body:
With Seattle Jade, work a foundation single crochet of 10 stitches. Then work extended single crochet back and forth until you have 32 rows in total. The 10 foundation stitches give you the roughly 2.75″ height; the 32 rows give you the roughly 10″ wrap.
The button loop:
At one short end, chain 10 to form the button loop. Sew the 2 cm button onto the opposite end, checking the fit on your mug first.
The edging (worked along each long edge, with Naples Red):
1. Work 42 sc evenly along the edge.
2. Work 43 esc into the front loop only.
3. Work the pretty shell row: 8 slip stitches, 14 sc, 14 hdc, 14 dc.
The bells (optional but wonderful):
Stitch one little jingle bell into every other shell — 7 bells in total. Prefer a quieter cozy? The plain shell edging is just as sweet without them.

A few tips from my hook
- Cotton DK holds the texture beautifully and won’t stretch out around a hot mug.
- Mark the first stitch of every row — extended single crochet rows can be sneaky to count.
- If your mug is a little bigger or smaller than average, add or remove rows before you work the edging.
Go on, make the one that jingles. Your December mornings deserve a soundtrack. Happy hooking!
