# Poinsettia Flower Gift Topper Free Crochet Pattern

You know what makes a gift unforgettable before it’s even opened? The wrapping. And a crocheted poinsettia perched on top of a plain kraft-paper box looks like a million bucks — even though it cost you leftover yarn and twenty minutes!
I keep a little basket of these by my wrapping station all December. They work on boxes, wine bottles, gift bags — anywhere you want instant Christmas magic. And the best part? The recipient gets a keepsake ornament along with their gift.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted weight yarn in red, green, and gold — leftovers work perfectly
- Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- About 18 inches of ribbon or twine for tying
Finished size: Approximately 4 inches across.
The Pattern
Worked in US crochet terms.
Outer Petals (make 6)
With red, chain 10.
Side A: SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 3 chains, TR in next 2 chains, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain.
Side B: TR in next 2 chains, DC in next 3 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, SC in last chain. Join, fasten off with a 6-inch tail.
Inner Petals (make 5)
With red, chain 8. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 2 chains, TR in next chain, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain, then mirror along the other side: TR in next chain, DC in next 2 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, SC in last chain. Join, fasten off with a tail.
Leaves (make 2)
With green, chain 9. Work like an inner petal but in green, replacing the tip with (HDC, chain 2, HDC) for a slightly rounder leaf.
Center
With gold, make a magic ring, chain 1, 8 SC into the ring, join. (8 SC) Then *chain 3, 3-DC bobble in next stitch, chain 3, slip stitch in next stitch* — repeat 4 times for a cluster of golden berries. Fasten off with a tail.

Backing Disc
With green, make a magic ring, chain 1, 10 SC into the ring, join. (10 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join. (20 SC) Fasten off. This disc hides all the petal ends on the back and gives you something sturdy to attach the ribbon to.
Curly Ribbon (make 3, optional but adorable)
With gold, chain 40. Work 3 SC in each chain across — the strip will curl into a perfect spiral all by itself! Fasten off.
Assembly
1. Sew the 6 outer petals into a circle, overlapping slightly.
2. Sew the 5 inner petals on top, offset between the outer ones.
3. Stitch the gold center into the middle.
4. Tuck the 2 green leaves behind the bottom edge and sew in place.
5. Sew the green backing disc over the back to cover all the ends.
6. Thread your ribbon or twine through the backing disc stitches and tie it in a bow, or leave long ends for tying around the gift. Tuck the curly ribbons under the flower before tying for extra flourish!
Sophie’s Tips
- This is the ultimate scrap project — each topper uses less than 20 yards total, so raid that leftover bin guilt-free.
- Make the backing disc in the same green as the leaves and nobody will ever know where the petals end and the disc begins.
- Tie one onto a bottle of wine with twine and you have a hostess gift that looks straight out of a boutique.
Wrap it up pretty — the topper does half the work for you!
