# Christmas Crochet Mug Cover Free Crochet Pattern

Sometimes the simplest designs are the prettiest. This Christmas mug cover pairs classic holiday colors with a gorgeous textured stitch — little (sc, hdc) shells that ripple across the fabric — and finishes with a neat border and button loop. It crochets up really quickly, so it’s ideal when you need a stack of handmade gifts in a hurry.
Add your mug, fill it with goodies, and you’ve got a gift that looks far fancier than the effort it took.
What you’ll need
- Small amounts of Stylecraft Special DK (or any light worsted / #3 equivalent) in 3 Christmas colors — Color 1, Color 2, and Color 3 (think red, green, and cream)
- 4.00 mm crochet hook
- 1 medium-size button
- Yarn needle and scissors
- Finished size: approx 3.5 x 10 inches (not including the loop)
- Skill level: Intermediate (the shell stitch needs a little focus, but it’s very rhythmic once it clicks)
Abbreviations (US): ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, rpt = repeat, sl st = slip stitch. “Base of ch” means working into the first stitch.
The pattern
With Color 1, chain 44 loosely. Work 1 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and 1 sc in each chain to the end. Turn. (43 sc)
- 2nd Row: Ch 1, work (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the base of the ch-1; *skip 2 sc, work (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the next sc*; repeat from * to * until the last 3 sc; skip 2 sc, work 1 sc into the last sc. Turn. Fasten off. (14 groups)
- Join Color 2.
- 3rd Row: Ch 1, work (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the base of the ch-1; *skip 2 hdc, work (1 sc, 2 hdc) into the next sc*; repeat from * to * until the last 3 stitches; skip 2 hdc, work 1 sc into the last sc. Turn.
- Color sequence: Repeat the 3rd Row once in Color 2, twice in Color 3, and twice in Color 2. Then join Color 1 and work the 3rd Row once more. Turn.
- 10th Row: Ch 1, 1 sc into the base of the ch-1, then 1 sc into each stitch to the end. Turn. Fasten off.
Border:
Join Color 2. Ch 1, 1 sc into the base of the ch-1, 1 sc in each sc across, 3 sc into the corner, 1 sc into each row end down the first side, 3 sc into the corner, 1 sc into each chain along the starting edge, 3 sc into the corner, 1 sc into each row end up the second side, 1 sc into the last corner, then slip stitch to the first sc. Turn.
Button loop row:
Ch 1, 1 sc into the base, 1 sc into each of the next 5 sc, chain 20, slip stitch to the side of the last sc worked (that’s your loop!), 1 sc into each of the next 6 sc, 3 sc into the corner, then 1 sc in each sc all the way around to the end — working 3 sc into the 2 remaining corners and 1 sc into the last corner — and slip stitch to the first sc. Fasten off.
Finishing: Weave in and trim all loose ends, then sew the button on to line up with the loop. Add a tiny reindeer charm or festive button on the front if you like — I couldn’t resist.

A few tips from my hook
- Chain loosely at the start — a tight foundation chain will pucker the whole cover.
- Count your groups after the 2nd row (you want 14); it saves headaches later.
- Everyone crochets a little differently, so treat the finished size as approximate and test-fit on your mug.
Quick, classic, and charming — the holiday trifecta. Happy hooking!
