# Crochet Santa-Inspired Mug Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Santa suit, but make it a mug cozy. This design takes the classic red suit + black belt + white trim combo and turns it into a sleek little wrap for your coffee mug, with clever handle holders instead of buttons. It’s quick, it’s festive, and it looks fantastic on your desk all December long.
What you’ll need
- 24/7 yarn in white, red, and black (a mercerized cotton like Lion Brand 24/7 gives it a beautiful sheen — lovely if you’re gifting it; any worsted acrylic works too)
- 4.0 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Pattern notes: As written, the cozy suits left-handed sipping (the stripe lands on the left). If you’re right-handed, just reverse the white stripe — instead of switching to white on the 6th stitch of Row 5, work it near the end on the 25th stitch, sc 6, then switch back to red on the 7th stitch and sc to the end. Once you start the white, you’ll see exactly when to switch.
The pattern
With white yarn and the 4 mm hook:
- R1: Ch 40.
- R2: Turn your work and crochet into the back bump of each chain (this gives a beautifully clean edge). Sc across, ch 1, turn. (39)
- R3–R4: Sc across. On the very last stitch of Row 4, switch to red. Ch 1, turn.
From here until the black rows, work in the front loop only — this creates a subtle ribbed texture.
- R5: Sc 5 in FLO. On the 6th stitch, switch to white as you pull through the last loop; sc 6; on the 7th stitch, switch back to red as you pull through; sc to the end of the row. Ch 1, turn. (Keep the yarn to the front of your work; the red carries across behind the white stripe.)
- R6: Sc 25; on the 26th stitch, switch to white; sc 6; on the 7th stitch, switch back to red; sc to the end. Ch 1, turn.
- R7–R8: Repeat Rows 5–6. At the end of Row 8, change to black. Ch 1, turn.
- R9–R12: Sc across in black, working into both loops. On the last stitch of the last row, switch back to red. Ch 1, turn.
- R13–R15: Sc across with red, repeating the white-stripe pattern from Rows 5 and 6.
The handle holders:
At the end of R15, sc down the side of the cozy with red, then ch 20 and slip stitch at the top to form the first holder loop.
- R16: Continue to sc across the top edge. Ch 20 and slip stitch to the bottom for the second holder loop, then sc along the side back toward the top.
Fasten off and hide all your tail ends. The two chain loops slide around your mug’s handle and hold the cozy in place — no buttons needed.

A few tips from my hook
- Carry the unused color loosely behind your work so the stripe section stays stretchy.
- The back-bump foundation edge is worth the tiny extra effort — it looks so much neater.
- Make the ch-20 loops a touch snug; they’ll relax a little with use.
Festive, functional, and finished in an evening. Cheers to that! Happy hooking!
