# Mint Meadow Granny Square Tote Free Crochet Pattern
Granny square totes never go out of style, and this mint meadow version might be my favorite one yet. Each square has a sweet little flower center — like a whole meadow you can carry on your arm. It is roomy enough for a book, a water bottle, and all the little things that migrate into my bag.
The construction is wonderfully simple: join squares for the front and back, add a gusset for depth, and crochet sturdy handles. If you can make one granny square, you can make this whole bag. It is the perfect weekend project!

What You’ll Need
- Worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn: approx. 500 yds mint, 150 yds white, 100 yds yellow
- Size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
Finished size:
- Approx. 14 inches wide x 13 inches tall x 4 inches deep, with 20-inch handles
The Pattern
Meadow Granny Square (make 18)
Each square measures 4.5 inches.

With yellow, make a magic ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 8 sc into ring, join. (8 sc)
Rnd 2 (petals): With white, join in any sc. \*Ch 2, 2 dc in same st, ch 2, sl st in same st, sl st in next st; repeat from \* around. (8 petals)
Rnd 3: With mint, join in any ch-2 space. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same space, \*3 dc in next space; repeat from \* around, join. (24 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, \*(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st (corner), dc in next 5 sts; repeat from \* around, adjusting so corners fall evenly, join. Fasten off.
Front and Back Panels
Whipstitch 9 squares together for the front (3 wide x 3 tall). Repeat for the back.
Gusset (bottom and sides)
With mint, chain 16.
Rows 1–40: Ch 1, sc in each ch across, turn. (15 sc)
The strip should measure about 4 inches wide and long enough to run up one side, across the bottom, and up the other side of the joined panels (approx. 30 inches). Adjust rows as needed.
Assembly
Whipstitch the gusset strip around three sides of the front panel, then around three sides of the back panel, leaving the top open. Turn right side out.
Top Edging and Handles
Join mint at the top edge. Work 3 rounds of sc evenly around the entire top opening.
Handles (make 2): Chain 70. Sc in second ch from hook and across (69 sc). Work 3 more rows of sc for a sturdy handle. Sew each end of the handles to the inside top edge of the bag, about 4 inches in from each side seam.
Weave in all ends. Line the bag with fabric if you like — it adds polish and keeps small items from poking through.
Sophie’s Tips
- Cotton yarn is a must for bags — it holds its shape and handles the weight of your stuff.
- Block your squares before joining so the tote comes out nice and square (pun intended).
- Add a magnetic snap to the top edge for extra security — totally worth the two minutes.
Carry a little meadow with you everywhere — happy stitching!
