# Crochet Sugar Maple Free Pattern

If you love instant-gratification crochet, this one’s for you! The Sugar Maple hat celebrates peak fall foliage in the yummiest shades of gold, orange, and mustard. It’s made with super bulky yarn on a big hook, so it flies off your hook in an evening — and the texture is so soft and squishy you’ll want to wear it everywhere.
The clever part? The whole hat is just one rectangle! You seam up the sides, cinch the top, pop on a giant pom pom, and you’re done.
Materials
- 9.0 mm (N) crochet hook
- 2 skeins of Vidalana Heathered Chunky by KnitCrate, 120 yards total, in the “Clementine” colorway (to substitute: any super bulky / #6 yarn works with the 9.0 mm hook)
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Tape measure
Finished Sizing
- 9 inches tall
- 20 inch circumference
- Pom pom is about 4 inches tall
Instructions
The hat is constructed by working a rectangle, seaming up the sides, then cinching the top.
Ch 20.
Row 1: In the 4th ch from the hook, work a dc. Work a dc in each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 3 and turn (counts as a dc). In the next st, work a dc in the blo (back loops only). Work a dc in the blo in each stitch across. Work a dc into the topmost ch of the turning ch.
Row 3: Ch 3 and turn (counts as a dc). In the next st, work a dc in the flo (front loops only). Work a dc in the flo in each stitch across. Work a dc into the topmost ch of the turning ch.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until the rectangle measures about 20 inches from the starting edge — that matches the 20-inch finished circumference of the hat. Do not cut the yarn; continue to the assembly below.

Assembly & Finishing
- Seaming: Turn the rectangle inside out (ribs facing inward) and line up the starting edge with the last row edge. Work a slip stitch into both layers of each stitch across, all the way across the row, keeping the edges lined up as you go. Weave in the ends.
- Cinching the top: Cut a long piece of yarn about 18–24 inches long. Thread a tapestry needle and weave in and out all the way around the top edge of the tube. Pull the ends tightly to cinch up the hat and tie a strong knot to secure.
- Making the pom pom: Cut a piece of yarn 12 inches long. Wrap yarn around all four of your fingers (about 110 times). Carefully slip the bundle off your hand, then tie the 12-inch strand around the bundle — tie it tightly! Cut all the loops of the pom pom, leaving the two long strands to act as a “handle.” Trim the pom pom down for a neat, dense look, keeping the two long ends. Tie the pom pom to the top of the hat with a strong knot and trim the ends from the inside of the hat.
And that’s it — your Sugar Maple hat is ready to hit the pumpkin patch!
Sophie’s Tips
- The alternating back-loop / front-loop rows create that gorgeous ribbed texture — don’t mix up which row you’re on. A row counter is your friend here.
- Super bulky yarn shows every stitch, so keep your tension nice and even.
- Make the pom pom extra fluffy by giving it a good shake and a second trim after tying it on.
Happy hooking — stay cozy out there!
