Crocheted Christmas wreath with poinsettias and bells

Some wreaths are pretty, and then some wreaths make people stop on the sidewalk. This is the second kind, my friend! I wanted a wreath that looked like a tiny Christmas garden exploded all over my front door — poinsettia blooms, glossy leaves, little golden bells that actually jingle, and all those fiddly little details that make guests lean in for a closer look.

Every bit of it is crocheted, right down to the bells. It takes a weekend of happy hooking, and honestly the assembly part — arranging everything just so — is the most fun. Mine hangs on my door from the first of December straight through New Year’s Day.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in Christmas green, red, gold, and a little white
  • 6-inch foam or straw wreath form
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle and pins for arranging
  • About 12 inches of wide ribbon for hanging

Finished size: Approximately 10 inches across once decorated.

The Pattern

Worked in US crochet terms.

Wreath Base

With green, join yarn to the wreath form with a slip stitch. Single crochet snugly and evenly all the way around the form until it is completely covered — push the stitches close together so no foam peeks through. Join with a slip stitch and fasten off. (My 6-inch form took roughly 90 SC, but the exact number doesn’t matter — just cover it fully.)

Mini Poinsettias (make 3)

With red, chain 9.

Side A: SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 2 chains, TR in next 2 chains, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain.

Side B: TR in next 2 chains, DC in next 2 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, SC in last chain. Join, fasten off with a tail. Make 5 petals per flower.

Center: With gold, make a magic ring, chain 1, 6 SC into the ring, join. (6 SC) Sew 5 petals in a circle, then sew the center on top.

Leaves (make 6)

With green, chain 10. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2, DC in next 3, HDC in next 2, (HDC, chain 2, HDC) in last chain, then mirror along the other side: HDC in next 2, DC in next 3, HDC in next 2, SC in last. Join, fasten off.

Jingle Bells (make 3)

With gold, make a magic ring. Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).

Round 1: 6 DC into the ring, join. (6 DC)
Round 2: 2 DC in each stitch around, join. (12 DC)
Round 3: DC in each stitch around, join. (12 DC)
Round 4: *DC in next stitch, (chain 2, slip stitch in same stitch)* — repeat around for a picot edge. Fasten off.

Chain 6 with gold for a hanging loop and attach it to the top of each bell. Tuck a real mini jingle bell inside each one before closing if you want the real jingle!

Tiny Details

  • Berries: With red, make a magic ring, 6 SC into the ring, join, then *SC in next, 2 SC in next* around (9 SC). Stuff lightly with a yarn scrap, cinch closed. Make 5.
  • White filler sprigs: With white, chain 12, slip stitch back along the chain. Make 4 for a snowy touch.

Assembly

Pin everything to the wreath first and step back to admire before you sew — I always rearrange at least twice! Cluster the 3 poinsettias in a triangle, tuck leaves behind and between them, nestle the bells so they hang slightly forward, and dot the berries and white sprigs into any gaps. Sew or hot-glue each piece firmly. Attach the ribbon hanger to the back top.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Cover the form in the round without turning — it gives a smoother, more even base for pinning your decorations.
  • Odd numbers of flowers always look more natural than even ones. Three poinsettias, three bells, five berries — trust me on this.
  • If your wreath will hang outside, give it a light mist of fabric protector spray so a surprise rain shower doesn’t ruin your weekend of work.

Now stand back and enjoy the compliments from the neighbors!
