# Charcoal Gray Bathroom Storage Basket Free Crochet Pattern
Every bathroom needs one of these. Mine holds rolled hand towels on the counter, my husband’s holds — well, let’s just say “bathroom things” — and they both look so much better than the plastic bins we had before. Charcoal gray hides everything, matches everything, and the thick textured stitches make it sturdy enough to actually use.
This is a wonderfully mindless project: one stitch pattern repeated until it’s tall enough. I crocheted mine during a movie marathon and barely looked at my hands.

The secret to a basket that stands up on its own is simple: cotton yarn, a hook one size smaller than you’d expect, and tight stitches. My basket has survived two years of daily use and still stands at attention.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted-weight cotton yarn in charcoal gray (approx. 400 yards — I used 3 skeins)
- Size G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook (yes, smaller than usual — that’s the trick)
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker
Finished size:
- Approximately 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall. (Add base rounds for wider, body rounds for taller.)

The Pattern
Base
Make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 8 SC into the ring, join. (8 SC)
Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 SC in each stitch around, join. (16 SC)
Round 3: Ch 1, *SC in the next stitch, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (24 SC)
Round 4: Ch 1, *SC in the next 2 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (32 SC)
Round 5: Ch 1, *SC in the next 3 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (40 SC)
Round 6: Ch 1, *SC in the next 4 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (48 SC)
Round 7: Ch 1, *SC in the next 5 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (56 SC)
Round 8: Ch 1, *SC in the next 6 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (64 SC)
The base should measure about 10 inches across and lie perfectly flat.
Body
Round 9: Ch 1, working in the back loop only, SC in each stitch around, join. (64 SC) — this creates the crisp corner between base and walls.
Rounds 10–24: Ch 2 (counts as HDC), work HDC in the third loop only (the horizontal bar behind the top of each stitch) in each stitch around, join. (64 HDC per round)
Working in the third loop gives that beautiful knit-like ribbed texture and makes the walls extra firm. Work until the walls measure about 7.5 inches from the base corner.
Top Edge and Handles
Round 25: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join. (64 SC)
Round 26 (handle openings): Ch 1, SC in the next 10 stitches, Ch 12, skip the next 12 stitches, SC in the next 20 stitches, Ch 12, skip the next 12 stitches, SC in the next 10 stitches, join. (40 SC + 2 Ch-12 spaces)
Round 27: Ch 1, SC in each stitch and work 12 SC in each Ch-12 space around, join. (64 SC)
Round 28: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join. Fasten off. (64 SC)
Weave in all ends. If the walls need extra starch-like firmness, spritz lightly with water, shape with your hands, and let dry.
Sophie’s Tips
- That smaller hook is doing real structural work — resist the urge to size up “for comfort.”
- The third-loop HDC is the whole look of this basket; mark your first stitch so your rounds stay straight.
- Make a second one in cream for the linen closet — they nest inside each other for storage.
Corral the clutter in style — your counter will thank you!
