Winne the Witch Halloween wreath with witch hat and legs

A crocheted wreath with a witch hat and dangling legs is the perfect door decoration for Halloween, and Winne here has become my favorite October tradition. She’s a sweet little witch — pointy hat, striped stockings, tiny boots — sitting right in the middle of her wreath like she owns the place. And you can easily make her with worsted-weight yarn, a 4.5mm hook, polyester fill, and a foam ring.

Everything is worked in simple rounds, stuffed lightly, and sewn to the wreath. The hat flops over with the cutest bend, and her little boots just swing in the breeze. Adorable and only mildly spooky — my kind of Halloween!

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in black, orange, purple, and white
  • 4.5mm (size 7) crochet hook
  • 10-inch foam ring
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Straight pins or hot glue gun

Finished size:

  • Approximately 15 inches across the wreath, with Winne’s legs adding about 5 inches below

The Pattern

Wreath Base

With black yarn, chain 12, SC in second chain from hook and across, chain 1, turn. (11 SC)

Work even rows until the strip wraps your ring snugly (about 32 inches). Fasten off and sew the strip around the ring.

With purple yarn, chain 80 and SC back along the chain to make a curly garland; wrap it around the wreath for a pop of color.

Winne’s Body

With purple yarn:

Round 1: Magic ring, chain 1, work 6 SC into the ring. Join. (6 SC)

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch around. Join. (12 SC)

Round 3: Chain 1, (SC in next, 2 SC in next) around. Join. (18 SC)

Rounds 4-7: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around. Join. (18 SC)

Round 8: Chain 1, (SC in next, SC2tog) around. Join. Stuff with fiberfill. (12 SC)

Round 9: Chain 1, SC2tog around. Join and fasten off. (6 SC)

Head

With white yarn:

Round 1: Magic ring, chain 1, work 6 SC into the ring. Join. (6 SC)

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch around. Join. (12 SC)

Round 3: Chain 1, (SC in next, 2 SC in next) around. Join. (18 SC)

Rounds 4-6: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around. Join. (18 SC)

Round 7: Chain 1, (SC in next, SC2tog) around. Join. Stuff. (12 SC)

Round 8: Chain 1, SC2tog around. Join and fasten off. (6 SC)

Stitch two black bead or yarn eyes and a tiny smile. Sew the head to the top of the body.

Witch Hat

With black yarn:

Round 1: Magic ring, chain 1, work 5 SC into the ring. Join. (5 SC)

Rounds 2-9: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around, increasing 2 stitches evenly each round. Join. (21 SC at end of Round 9)

Round 10: Chain 1, (SC in next, 2 SC in next) around. Join. (28 SC)

Round 11: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around. Join and fasten off. (28 SC)

With orange yarn, chain 32, join to form a ring, and work 1 round of SC for the hat band. Slide it on, bend the tip of the hat over, and stitch it in place. Sew the hat to Winne’s head at a jaunty tilt.

Legs and Boots (make 2)

Starting with orange, alternate black and orange every 2 rounds:

Rounds 1-12: Magic ring, chain 1, work 8 SC into the ring; continue 8 SC around each round. Join each round. (8 SC)

Stuff lightly. For boots, with black yarn work 3 rounds of 8 SC, then flatten and sew shut. Sew boots to the legs, then sew the legs to the bottom of Winne’s body so they dangle over the wreath.

Sew Winne to the center bottom of the wreath.

Sophie’s Tips

  • A 4.5mm hook with worsted-weight yarn gives Winne a nice firm fabric that holds her shape — don’t size up or she’ll go floppy.
  • Stitch the face before sewing the head to the body. Tiny faces are so much easier when you can turn the head around in your hand.
  • Make the hat band in lime green instead of orange for a second Winne — sisters for each side of a double door!

Happy crocheting, and give Winne a wave when you hang her up!
