Simple Halloween wreath with crocheted pumpkins

For those of us who are too busy for a lengthy project but still want to add a spooky touch to the main entrance — this one’s for you! Instead of a fussy flower motif, we decorate a simple wrapped wreath with a whole patch of cute little pumpkins. The gauge isn’t too critical here — just follow 16 sts x 14 rows and you’ll be right on track.

This is the definition of a weekend project: one evening for the ring, one for the pumpkins, and you’re hanging it on the door Sunday afternoon. The pumpkins are all the same simple shape in different sizes and shades of orange, with curly green vines for charm. Rustic, cheerful, and done before Monday!

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in orange, dark orange, green, and brown
  • Size G crochet hook
  • 10-inch foam wreath ring
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Hot glue gun or straight pins

Finished size:

  • Approximately 14 inches across the finished wreath
  • Gauge: 16 sts x 14 rows = 4 inches (not critical for this project)

The Pattern

Wreath Base

With brown yarn, chain 12, SC in second chain from hook and across, chain 1, turn. (11 SC)

Work even rows until the strip wraps your ring snugly (about 32 inches). Fasten off and sew the strip around the ring.

Pumpkins (make 9 in mixed sizes)

Small: With orange yarn, magic ring, chain 1, work 6 SC into the ring, join (6 SC). Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join (12 SC). Rounds 3-4: SC around, join (12 SC). Round 5: SC2tog around, join, stuff, fasten off (6 SC).

Medium: Work the small pumpkin through Round 2, then Round 3: (SC in next, 2 SC in next) around, join (18 SC). Rounds 4-5: SC around (18 SC). Round 6: (SC in next, SC2tog) around, join (12 SC), stuff. Round 7: SC2tog around, join and close (6 SC).

Large: Add one more increase round to reach 24 SC, work 2 rounds even, then decrease back down. Stuff and close.

Stems: with brown yarn, chain 5, SC back along the chain, and sew to the top of each pumpkin.

Curly Vines (make 6)

With green yarn, chain 25, then work 2 SC in each chain back along the chain. The piece will curl on its own — that’s the magic! Sew or glue a vine next to each large pumpkin.

Assembly

Arrange the pumpkins around the wreath in a pleasing cluster — I like a big group at the bottom and smaller ones trailing up each side. Glue or pin them in place, tucking the vines in last. Add a simple bow from a strip of orange fabric if you like.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Mixing two shades of orange makes the wreath look so much richer — one ball of each is plenty.
  • Don’t stress the gauge: 16 sts x 14 rows is a guide, not a law. Pumpkins forgive everything.
  • Make a few extra mini pumpkins as table scatter for your Halloween party — same pattern, instant decor!

Happy crocheting, and have a hauntingly wonderful Halloween!
