I’ll be honest — I started making these as Christmas gifts and ended up keeping half of them for myself. There’s something about a tiny poinsettia dangling from your keys that just makes unlocking the front door feel festive!

This is a wonderful beginner-friendly project because it’s worked in simple parts — petals first, then leaves, then the strap — and assembled at the end. No shaping headaches, no counting marathons. You can finish one in an evening while catching up on your favorite show.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in red, green, and gold (scraps are perfect)
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • 1-inch split keyring

Finished size: Approximately 3.5 inches long, not counting the keyring.

The Pattern

Worked in US crochet terms.

Petals (make 6)

With red, chain 8.

Side A: SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 2 chains, TR in next chain, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain.

Side B (working along the opposite side of the foundation chain): TR in next chain, DC in next 2 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, SC in last chain. Join with a slip stitch to the first SC.

Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail for sewing. Each petal is about 1.75 inches long.

Leaves (make 2)

With green, chain 8. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2 chains, DC in next 2 chains, HDC in next chain, (HDC, chain 2, HDC) in last chain, then mirror along the other side: HDC in next chain, DC in next 2 chains, HDC in next 2 chains, SC in last chain. Join, fasten off with a tail.

Center

With gold, make a magic ring. Chain 1, work 6 SC into the ring, join. (6 SC)

Round 2: *SC in next stitch, chain 2, slip stitch in next stitch* — repeat 3 times for 3 tiny berry bumps. Fasten off with a tail.

Strap

With green, chain 30. SC in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across. (29 SC) Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Fold the strap in half to form a loop and thread it through the split keyring.

Assembly

1. Arrange the 6 red petals in a circle, overlapping slightly, and sew the base ends together.

2. Sew the gold center onto the middle of the petals.

3. Stitch the 2 green leaves behind the flower, angled outward like a little bow tie.

4. Sew the folded end of the strap firmly to the back of the flower, right between the leaves. Weave in all ends and clip the keyring on.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Use cotton yarn if you can — it holds its shape better than acrylic when it’s bouncing around in a purse all day.
  • Make a bunch in an afternoon and tie them to gift bags instead of bows. Instant upgrade!
  • Dab a tiny drop of fabric glue on the center knot for extra security — keychains take a beating.

Clip it on and carry a little Christmas everywhere you go!
