Crocheted Red Festive Dress

Friends, if there is one dress that screams Christmas Eve to me, it is this one. The Crocheted Red Festive Dress is worked in the most vibrant holiday red, with a delicate shell-stitch bodice that looks intricate but is honestly just a lovely rhythm once you get going. I made mine for Christmas Eve dinner last year, and my sister-in-law literally gasped when I walked in. That is the kind of reaction we are going for!

The pattern works up with a gauge of 26 stitches and 7 rows in the shell stitch pattern — take a minute to check your swatch, because that lacy bodice fit is everything here. The skirt flares out just enough to twirl, and yes, I tested the twirl. Extensively.

What You’ll Need

  • DK weight yarn in festive red (I used about 1,400 yards)
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • 1 small button for the back neckline
  • Stitch markers

Finished size:

  • Approximately 36 inch bust, 28 inch waist, and 38 inches long from shoulder to hem. Fits sizes S–M
  • Adjust the starting chain in multiples of 6 for other sizes

The Pattern

Gauge note:

  • The pattern works up with a gauge of 26 stitches and 7 rows = 4 inches in shell stitch
  • If your swatch is off, go up or down a hook size until it matches — the bodice shaping depends on it

Back Bodice

Chain 86. Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. (85 SC)

Row 2 (shell row):

  • Chain 3 (counts as DC), skip the next 2 stitches, *5 DC in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, SC in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches*, repeat from * to * across to the last 3 stitches, 5 DC in the next stitch, skip 2, DC in the last stitch, turn

Row 3: Chain 1, SC in each stitch across, turn. (85 SC)

Rows 4–15: Repeat Rows 2–3 six more times, ending with a Row 3.

Fasten off.

Front Bodice

Work exactly as for the back bodice through Row 12.

Row 13 (begin neckline): Work the shell pattern across the first 36 stitches only, turn, leaving the rest unworked.

Row 14: Chain 1, SC in each stitch across, turn. (36 SC)

Row 15: Work the shell pattern across, turn.

Row 16: Chain 1, SC2tog, SC in each stitch across to the last 2 stitches, SC2tog, turn. (34 SC)

Row 17: Work the shell pattern across, turn.

Fasten off. Skip the center 13 stitches of Row 12 and repeat Rows 13–17 on the remaining 36 stitches for the other front shoulder, mirroring the decreases.

Skirt

With the right sides facing out, join yarn with a slip stitch at the bottom edge of the back bodice.

Round 1: Chain 1, work SC evenly around the entire bodice bottom edge — back (85 sts) plus both fronts — for a total of 170 SC. Join with a slip stitch.

Round 2: Chain 3 (counts as DC), skip 2, *5 DC in the next stitch, skip 2, SC in the next stitch, skip 2*, repeat from * to * around. You will have 28 shells plus a partial repeat; adjust the last repeat by working 3 DC instead of 5 so the round lies flat. Join.

Rounds 3–6: Slip stitch over to the center of the first shell, chain 1, SC in the same stitch, *skip 2, 5 DC in the next SC (the SC between shells below), skip 2, SC in the center DC of the next shell*, repeat around, join.

Round 7 (increase round): Work as for Rounds 3–6, but work 2 shells into every 4th shell space below. (35 shells)

Rounds 8–12: Work even in the shell pattern. (35 shells)

Round 13 (increase round): Work 2 shells into every 5th shell space below. (42 shells)

Rounds 14–22: Work even in the shell pattern. (42 shells)

Round 23 (edging): Chain 1, *SC in the next stitch, skip 1, 3 DC in the next stitch, skip 1*, repeat around, join. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Finishing

1. Seam the bodice shoulders together, leaving a 4-inch opening at the back neckline; sew on the button with a crocheted loop.

2. Seam the bodice sides from the underarm down to the skirt.

3. Weave in all ends and give the whole dress a gentle block so those shells open up beautifully.

Sophie’s Tips

  • That gauge of 26 stitches and 7 rows really matters here — the shell bodice has zero stretch forgiveness, so swatch first and thank yourself later.
  • Weave your ends in as you finish each section. A red dress shows every stray tail, and future-you will be so grateful.
  • Add a thin gold ribbon threaded through the waistline round for an extra festive sparkle — it takes five minutes and looks like a million bucks.

Merry Christmas Eve, gorgeous — now go twirl under the mistletoe!
