Crochet skull wreath with orange and black striped ruffle

Eight little skulls. One gloriously ruffled stripe. And the most gloriously ghoulish door on the whole street — that’s what this pattern gives you, friends. I made mine last October and I swear my mail carrier did a double take every single day for two weeks. In the best possible way!

This wreath is built on a classic foam ring wrapped in black yarn, then we add a big striped ruffle in orange and black for that full, dramatic shape. The stars of the show are eight crocheted skulls, worked in rounds with the sweetest little eye sockets and a stitched nose and grin. They’re cheeky, not creepy — spooktacular, as I’d say.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in white, black, and orange
  • Size G crochet hook
  • 10-inch foam wreath ring
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Black embroidery floss for skull faces
  • Hot glue gun or straight pins

Finished size: Approximately 14 inches across the finished wreath, including the ruffle.

The Pattern

Wreath Base

With black yarn, work a long single crochet band to wrap the ring:

Chain 14, SC in second chain from hook and across, chain 1, turn. (13 SC)

Work even rows until the band is long enough to wrap snugly around your foam ring (about 32 inches for a 10-inch ring). Fasten off, then sew the band around the ring with the tapestry needle, overlapping the ends. Weave in ends.

Striped Ruffle

With black yarn, chain 140 (or enough to circle the ring generously with gathering). Join with a slip stitch to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as DC), DC in each chain around. Join. (140 DC)

Round 2: Chain 3, work 2 DC in each stitch around. Join with orange. (280 DC)

Round 3: With orange, chain 3, work 2 DC in each stitch around. Join with black. (560 DC)

Round 4: With black, chain 3, DC in each stitch around. Join and fasten off. (560 DC)

Gather one long edge of the ruffle with a running stitch and pull to fit around the ring; sew or pin it in place.

Skull (make 8)

With white yarn:

Round 1: Magic ring, chain 1, work 8 SC into the ring. Join. (8 SC)

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch around. Join. (16 SC)

Round 3: Chain 1, (SC in next, 2 SC in next) around. Join. (24 SC)

Rounds 4-6: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around. Join. (24 SC)

Round 7: Chain 1, (SC in next 2, SC2tog) around. Join. (18 SC)

Round 8: Chain 1, (SC in next, SC2tog) around. Join. Stuff the skull lightly with fiberfill. (12 SC)

Round 9: Chain 1, SC2tog around. Join. Fasten off and close the hole. (6 SC)

For the face, stitch two small oval eyes and a tiny triangle nose with black embroidery floss, then add a little stitched grin. Sew the eight skulls evenly around the wreath, alternating their tilts for maximum personality.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Stitch the skull faces before sewing them to the wreath — it’s much easier to get those grins looking mischievous when the skulls are loose.
  • For a fuller ruffle, work Round 3 as 3 DC in each stitch. More ruffle, more drama!
  • Use straight pins instead of glue if you want to store the wreath flat and refresh it next year.

Go haunt your front door in style — your neighbors won’t know what grinned at them!
