Crochet Red and White Striped Dress

Is there anything more cheerful than red and white stripes at Christmastime? This dress is a total showstopper — picture candy-cane chic, but make it fashion. I wore mine to our town’s holiday parade and a little girl pointed at me and whispered “look, it’s Christmas!” to her mom. Honestly, best compliment I have ever received.

The stripes do all the visual work here, so the stitches stay wonderfully simple — just double crochet, changing colors every two rows. It is the perfect make-ahead project for December because those stripes fly by once you find your rhythm.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in red (about 800 yards) and white (about 600 yards)
  • Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Finished size:

  • Approximately 36 inch bust, 29 inch waist, and 37 inches long from shoulder to hem
  • Fits sizes S–M

The Pattern

Stripe sequence: Work 2 rows red, 2 rows white throughout, carrying the unused color loosely up the side edge. Always change colors on the last yarn-over of the final stitch of the row.

Back

With red, chain 64. DC in the 4th chain from the hook and in each chain across. (62 DC)

Rows 2–18: Chain 3 (counts as DC), DC in each stitch across, turn, following the stripe sequence. (62 DC)

Rows 19–22 (armhole shaping): Slip stitch across the first 5 stitches, chain 3, DC in each stitch across to the last 5 stitches, turn, leaving the last 5 unworked. (52 DC)

Rows 23–30: Chain 3, DC in each stitch across, turn, continuing stripes. (52 DC)

Fasten off.

Front

Work exactly as for the back through Row 26.

Row 27 (begin neckline): Chain 3, DC in the next 19 stitches, turn, leaving the remaining stitches unworked. (20 DC)

Row 28: Chain 3, DC2tog, DC in each stitch across, turn. (19 DC)

Row 29: Chain 3, DC in each stitch across to the last 3 stitches, DC2tog, DC in the last stitch, turn. (18 DC)

Row 30: Chain 3, DC in each stitch across, turn. (18 DC)

Fasten off. Return to Row 26, skip the center 12 stitches, join yarn in the next stitch, and repeat Rows 27–30 for the other shoulder.

Striped dress bodice

Skirt

Join red yarn with a slip stitch at the bottom edge of the back piece.

Round 1: Chain 1, SC evenly around the full bottom edge of front and back (124 SC total), join, continuing the stripe sequence.

Rounds 2–3: Chain 3, DC in each stitch around, join. (124 DC)

Round 4: Chain 3, *DC in the next 15 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (132 DC)

Rounds 5–7: DC in each stitch around, join. (132 DC)

Round 8: Chain 3, *DC in the next 16 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (140 DC)

Rounds 9–11: DC in each stitch around, join. (140 DC)

Round 12: Chain 3, *DC in the next 17 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch*, repeat around, join. (148 DC)

Rounds 13–20: DC in each stitch around, join, continuing stripes to the end. (148 DC)

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Sleeves (Make 2)

With red, chain 40. DC in the 4th chain from the hook and across. (38 DC)

Rows 2–6: Chain 3, DC across, turn, following the stripe sequence. (38 DC)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Assembly

1. Seam the shoulders, then set in the sleeves, centering each sleeve over the shoulder seam.

2. Seam the sides of the bodice and the underarm/sleeve seams.

3. Seam the skirt side? No side seam needed — it was worked in the round! Just weave in your ends.

4. Work one round of SC in red around the neckline for a clean finish.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Carry the unused color up the side instead of cutting it — you will save yourself from weaving in roughly forty ends, and the seam hides the carried yarn completely.
  • Keep your stripe tension relaxed. If the carried yarn pulls, the side seam will pucker and the stripes will wave.
  • This dress is adorable in non-Christmas colorways too — I am planning a navy and white one for summer parties.

Stripe your way into the holiday season — you are going to look absolutely festive!
