Crochet wreath with flowers and hearts

This wreath makes my heart happy in the most literal way. Colorful crocheted hearts and cheerful flowers scattered over fresh greenery — it’s sweet, it’s joyful, and it’s the kind of handmade piece that makes people smile before they even knock. I hung mine on the front door in December, and you know what? It stayed up through Valentine’s Day, and nobody batted an eye. It works beautifully for both!

The hearts are quick little appliqués you’ll memorize after the second one, and the flowers are simple layered petals in the happiest colors. This is a lovely weekend project with a big payoff.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in forest green, red, pink, white, and yellow
  • 5.0 mm (H) crochet hook
  • 12-inch wire or foam wreath form
  • Tapestry needle and scissors

Finished size: Approximately 13 inches across when finished.

The Pattern

Wreath Cover

With forest green, join yarn to the wreath form with a slip stitch. Chain 1, then work single crochet stitches tightly around the form until it is fully covered. Join with a slip stitch, fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Hearts (make 8 — 4 red, 4 pink)

Make a magic ring. Into the ring, work: chain 3, 3 treble crochet, 3 double crochet, chain 1, 1 treble crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet, 3 treble crochet, chain 3, slip stitch. Pull the ring closed, join, and fasten off, leaving a tail. Gently shape with your fingers — the top dips into that perfect heart curve.

Layered Flowers (make 6 — mixed colors)

Inner layer: With yellow, make a magic ring, chain 1, work 8 single crochet into the ring, join. (8) Fasten off.

Outer petals: Join your petal color in any stitch. *Chain 3, 2 double crochet in the same stitch, chain 3, slip stitch in the next stitch* — repeat from * around. (4 petals) Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Leaves (make 10)

With forest green, chain 9. In the second chain from the hook, work: single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet in the next 3, half double crochet, single crochet. Fasten off, leaving a tail.

Assembling Your Wreath

Arrange the leaves around the covered wreath first, overlapping them slightly. Then place the flowers evenly around the ring, and tuck the hearts into the spaces between — alternate red and pink for a candy-like rhythm. I like to cluster two hearts close together near the top, like they’re chatting. Sew everything firmly in place.

Sophie’s Tips

  • The hearts curl a little at first — a quick press with a warm iron (through a cloth!) flattens them perfectly.
  • For Valentine’s Day, swap the green cover for blush pink and skip the Christmas colors entirely.
  • Sew the pieces on rather than gluing if kids will be handling it — much sturdier.

Sweet hearts, happy flowers, and double the holidays — this wreath earns its place on your door twice a year!
