Christmas poinsettia tree

What is better than a Christmas tree? A Christmas tree made of poinsettias, obviously. I dreamed this one up for my side table — a soft green cone absolutely covered in red crocheted blooms with sunny centers — and now it is the thing guests ask about before they even say hello.

You will use basic to medium stitches here: chain, half double, double, and treble crochet for the flowers, and plain single crochet for the tree itself. If you can make a flower, you can make this tree.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in green (about 300 yards), red (about 150 yards), and yellow (small amount)
  • Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Polyester stuffing
  • Tapestry needle

Finished size: About 14″ tall, 8″ wide at the base.

The Pattern

Tree Cone

With green, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join. (6 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sc)

Round 3: Ch 1, *(sc in next st, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (18 sc)

Round 4: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (18 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, *(sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (24 sc)

Round 6: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (24 sc)

Round 7: Ch 1, *(sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (30 sc)

Round 8: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (30 sc)

Round 9: Ch 1, *(sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (36 sc)

Round 10: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (36 sc)

Round 11: Ch 1, *(sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (42 sc)

Round 12: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (42 sc)

Round 13: Ch 1, *(sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (48 sc)

Rounds 14–26: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (48 sc)

Round 27 (ruffled edge): Ch 1, *(skip 1 st, 5 dc in next st, skip 1 st, sc in next st)* around — 12 shells — join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Stuff the cone lightly so it holds its shape. Make a base disk: with green, work increase rounds to 48 sts (same as Rounds 1–13 above), fasten off, and sew it to the bottom of the cone.

Mini Poinsettias (make 12)

With red, make a magic ring. Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join. (6 sc)

Petal round: *(Ch 7, starting in 2nd ch from hook work: sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc down the chain, then sl st in the next base st)* 6 times. (6 petals)

Fasten off, leaving a tail. With yellow, make a magic ring, 6 sc into ring, join, and sew the yellow center onto the flower.

Leaves (make 8)

With green, chain 9. Sc in 2nd ch, hdc in next, dc in next 3, hdc in next, sc in last, then mirror back down the other side of the chain. Fasten off.

Assembly

Sew the 12 poinsettias evenly over the cone in a spiral from top to bottom, tucking a green leaf beside every third flower or so. Top the tree with a yellow star: make two star shapes (chain-based points or simple 5-point appliques), sew them back to back, and stitch to the tip of the cone.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Pin the flowers in place before sewing — step back, squint at it, rearrange. The spiral looks best when the spacing is a little imperfect.
  • A tiny bit of stuffing behind each flower keeps the blooms from lying flat against the cone.
  • This tree folds flat-ish for storage if you skip heavy stuffing — just fluff it back up next December.

The prettiest tree on the block, and not a single needle on the floor!
