# Christmas Poinsettia Candle Coaster Free Crochet Pattern

Some projects are an evening. This one is a coffee break. I wanted something quick and pretty to dress up the plain pillar candles on my coffee table, and this little poinsettia coaster — red petals, green leaves, sunny center — took me about an hour with a 4.5 mm hook and worsted-weight yarn.
It also makes the loveliest last-minute gift. Tuck one under a candle, tie a ribbon around both, and you look like the most thoughtful person at the party.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted-weight yarn in red (about 50 yards), green (about 30 yards), and yellow (about 15 yards)
- 4.5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
Finished size: About 7″ in diameter.
The Pattern
Flower Center
With yellow, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, *(sc in next st, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (18 sc)
Front Petals (make 9)
Join red yarn in any stitch of Round 3.
Petal round: *(Ch 7, starting in 2nd ch from hook work: sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc down the chain — 6 sts — then sl st in the next 2 base sts)* 9 times around. (9 petals)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Back Petals (make 9)
Join red yarn in a back loop of Round 3, offset from a front petal.
Work the same petal round 9 times: *(ch 7, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc down the chain, sl st in next 2 base sts)*. (9 petals peeking out behind the front layer)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Leaves (make 4)
With green, chain 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, dc in next 4, hdc in next, sc in last ch, then work back down the other side of the chain mirroring the stitches. Join with a sl st and fasten off, leaving a tail.
Sew the 4 leaves evenly around the back of the flower, peeking out between the red petals.
Finishing
Join green yarn in any back loop of Round 3 and work one round of sc in each back loop around (18 sc) to neaten the back. Fasten off and weave in all ends. Block lightly so the coaster lies flat, then set your candle right in the middle.

Sophie’s Tips
- Keep your petals snug — chain loosely and the petals flop; chain tightly and they stand up like a real bloom.
- This is the perfect scrap-buster: one coaster uses less than 100 yards total, so raid that red-and-green bin.
- Make a set of four in an afternoon and you have Christmas gifts for the neighbors handled.
Light the candle, friend — you earned the cozy!
