# Navy Open Weave Shrug Free Crochet Pattern
A shrug is the hardest-working layer in my closet. This navy open-weave version goes over dresses for dinner, over tanks for the office, over everything when the air conditioning is set to arctic. The open stitch keeps it light and elegant, and navy goes with literally everything I own.
It’s one rectangle. That’s the whole secret — one rectangle, folded and seamed, with a pretty edging. If you’re a confident beginner, this is your next project.

I used a navy acrylic with a subtle sheen — it looks far more expensive than it was. The open weave means it works up shockingly fast for the yardage.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted-weight acrylic yarn in navy (approx. 500 yards)
- Size H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
Finished size:
- Adult S–M: 36 inches wide × 20 inches tall before folding. (Add 4 inches to the starting chain per size up.)

The Pattern
Main Rectangle
Ch 110.
Row 1: DC in the 6th chain from the hook (the skipped chains count as DC + Ch 1), *Ch 1, skip 1 chain, DC in the next chain,* repeat across, Ch 3 (counts as DC), turn.
Count: Ch 110 − 5 = 105 chains worked; each repeat uses 2 chains → 52 repeats + final DC = 53 DC, 52 Ch-1 spaces.
Rows 2–30: *DC in the next DC, Ch 1, skip the Ch-1 space,* repeat across, DC in the turning chain, Ch 3, turn. (53 DC, 52 Ch-1 spaces per row)
Work until the rectangle measures about 20 inches tall. Fasten off.
Assembly
Fold the rectangle in half widthwise (bring the two short ends together). Seam each side from the outer edge inward for 6 inches, leaving the center open — these are the armholes. Try it on: your arms go through the seamed openings, and the folded edge sits across your upper back.
Edging
Join yarn at any bottom corner.
Round 1: Work SC evenly around the entire outer edge of the shrug (fronts, bottom, and neck) — about 200 SC.
Round 2: *Ch 3, skip 1, SC in the next,* repeat around for a delicate picot-like edge. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends. Steam lightly to relax the stitches.
Sophie’s Tips
- One rectangle really is the whole pattern — the magic is in the folding.
- If the armholes feel tight, seam 5 inches instead of 6; if loose, seam 7.
- This shrug in cream is wedding-guest perfection — same pattern, totally different mood.
Drape it on and go — effortless elegance in an evening’s work!
