# Moose Mug Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Some cozies are cute. This one is *ruggedly* cute — like a tiny lumberjack showed up for your morning coffee. A warm brown band in red plaid, a sweet moose face with proper antlers, and a little scarf to keep him warm. It gives me total cozy-cabin-in-the-snowy-woods vibes, and it works up from simple single crochet, so it’s very approachable.
What you’ll need
- Knit Picks Brava Worsted (100% acrylic), 1 ball each: Sienna, Cream, Wine, Red, and Black (Dublin is a fun optional extra if you want to play with color)
- G/6 (4.00 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle and scissors
- 1/2″ buttons for the closure, plus 1/2″ and 1/4″ gem buttons for the eyes
- Gauge: 7.5 sc x 8 rows = 2″
- Finished size: approx 11″ x 4″
Pattern notes: The cozy is worked flat in rows using chain, single crochet, and slip stitch. Take a second to check your gauge — it really helps the plaid sit right.
The pattern
The base band:
With Sienna, chain 37. Work single crochet back and forth — Rows 2 through 12 each have 36 sc — until you have a long rectangle that wraps comfortably around your mug.
The plaid:
Switch to Wine (with Red striping) and work Rows 1–5 of the plaid pattern right over the band, weaving vertical and horizontal stripes into that classic lumberjack check. It looks impressive but it’s just neat color changes.
The button fasteners:
At one short end, make two sturdy loops — chain 10 and skip 6 stitches for each — then sew your 1/2″ buttons on the opposite end to match. Try it on your mug to check the fit before you sew.
The moose:
- Snout: With Cream, work in rounds, growing from 8 stitches to 12, then to 20. Stuff it lightly and sew it to the front of the cozy.
- Antlers: Work Rows 1–8 to shape each antler; make two and attach them above the snout.
- Eyes: Sew on the gem buttons — mixing the 1/2″ and 1/4″ sizes gives him the sweetest expression.
- Scarf: Crochet a little scarf with a tail in Wine and Red, and wrap it around his neck. Because even a moose gets chilly.

A few tips from my hook
- Block the band lightly before adding the plaid so the stripes sit perfectly straight.
- Sew every appliqué piece on firmly — mugs get grabbed a lot, and this little guy deserves to stay put.
- No gem buttons on hand? Simple black yarn French knots make adorable eyes too.
Pour a big mug of cocoa, wrap it in flannel-look plaid, and let the moose do the rest. Happy hooking!
