# Crochet Scarecrow Hat For Adults

Crochet scarecrow hat with patches, maple leaf, and sunflower

If you love fall decor as much as I do, you’re going to adore this one! This scarecrow hat is pure autumn joy — a cozy wide-brim hat in a warm oatmeal shade, decked out with colorful patches, a maple leaf, and a sweet little sunflower. It comes in kids’ and adult sizes, so the whole family can dress up for hayrides, pumpkin picking, or a Halloween party.

The base hat works up quickly in simple double crochet, and then the real fun begins: sewing on all those adorable fall appliques!

Materials

  • Size H/8 / 5.0 mm crochet hook
  • About 250 yds of medium weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver in Café Latte used in the original)
  • About 40 yds each of two contrasting colors for the patches (Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry Red and Pumpkin used in the original)
  • About 40 yds of a contrasting color for the leaf (Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Rust used in the original)
  • About 20 yds of gold yarn (Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Mustard used in the original) and about 20 yds of brown yarn (Red Heart Super Saver in Coffee used in the original) for the sunflower
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

  • Gauge: 3 dc and 2 rounds = about 1 inch
  • Adult size: about 16 inches long, fits about a 21 inch head circumference
  • Kids’ size: about 14 inches long, fits about a 20 inch head circumference

Special Stitches

Repeat to make a second patch in the other color.

Second Point: Row 1: Ch 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Sl st to the st you started in, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn. (6 sc) Row 2: Sc in next 5 sts, ch 3. (5 sc) Row 3: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. Sl st in the st you started in, sl st in next st. Ch 1, turn. (7 sc) Row 4: Sc in next 5 sts, ch 2. (4 sc) Do not fasten off.

Stem: Ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across. Sl st to the st you started in, sl st in next 2 sts. (9 sc) Do not fasten off.

Fifth Point: Repeat the Fourth Point. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing if you’re attaching it to the hat.

Mini Sunflower

Rnd 1: With brown yarn, make a magic ring. Work 12 dc in the ring. Join with sl st to first st of rnd. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st around. Join gold yarn in the last st of the rnd. Join with sl st to first st of rnd. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: *Ch 3, tr in same st. Ch 2, sl st in next st. Sl st in next st.* Repeat 11 more times. Fasten off gold yarn, leaving a tail for sewing. (12 petals)

Finishing

Sew the two patches onto the hat — one on each side works great. Sew the maple leaf and the mini sunflower in place among them. Weave in all ends. Done!

Sophie’s Tips

  • Leave long tails on every applique; you’ll thank yourself at sewing time.
  • Place your patches and leaves before you sew anything — try the hat on and check the arrangement in a mirror.
  • This hat makes an amazing Halloween costume piece, but honestly? I’d wear it all fall long.

Happy hooking — have a scarecrow-tastic fall!
