# Forget-Me-Not Blue Mesh Bag Free Crochet Pattern
Oh, this bag makes my heart so happy. I designed it for my Saturday farmers-market runs, and now I reach for it constantly — groceries, library books, a spare skein of yarn that “accidentally” followed me home from the craft store. The open mesh stretches to hold way more than you’d think, and those tiny forget-me-not flowers scattered over the blue just make me smile every time I pick it up.
The best part? It works up fast. The body is one big happy round of mesh, the base is a simple circle, and the flowers are little five-petal cuties you can crochet while half-watching TV. If you can double crochet and chain, you can make this bag.

I made mine in a cornflower blue cotton, because cotton doesn’t stretch out of shape the way acrylic can in a market bag. But honestly, this pattern would be gorgeous in any color — I have plans for a sage green one next, with cream flowers.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted-weight cotton yarn in blue (approx. 350 yards — I used about 2 skeins)
- Small amounts of worsted-weight cotton in yellow and white for the flowers (scraps are perfect)
- Size H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle for weaving ends and sewing flowers
- Stitch marker
Finished size:
- Approximately 13 inches wide and 14 inches tall, not including the handles
- Handles have about a 10-inch drop. The mesh stretches generously

The Pattern
This bag is worked from the bottom up: a flat circular base, then mesh rounds for the body, a solid band at the top, and two handles. Flowers are made separately and sewn on at the end.
Base
With blue, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 8 SC into the ring, join with a slip stitch to the first SC. (8 SC)
Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 SC in each stitch around, join. (16 SC)
Round 3: Ch 1, *SC in the next stitch, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (24 SC)
Round 4: Ch 1, *SC in the next 2 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (32 SC)
Round 5: Ch 1, *SC in the next 3 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (40 SC)
Round 6: Ch 1, *SC in the next 4 stitches, 2 SC in the next stitch,* repeat around, join. (48 SC)
The base should measure about 5.5 inches across and lie flat. If it cups, go up a hook size; if it ruffles, go down.
Mesh Body
Round 7: Ch 5 (counts as DC + Ch 2), skip the next 2 stitches, *DC in the next stitch, Ch 2, skip the next 2 stitches,* repeat around, join with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the beginning Ch 5. (16 DC, 16 Ch-2 spaces)
Rounds 8–21: Slip stitch into the next Ch-2 space, Ch 5 (counts as DC + Ch 2), *DC in the next Ch-2 space, Ch 2,* repeat around, join with a slip stitch to the 3rd chain of the beginning Ch 5. (16 DC, 16 Ch-2 spaces per round)
Work 14 mesh rounds total, or until the body measures about 11 inches from the base.
Top Band
Round 22: Ch 1, work 2 SC in each Ch-2 space around, join. (32 SC)
Rounds 23–24: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join. (32 SC)
Do not fasten off — continue to the first handle.
Handles (make 2)
Handle 1: Ch 1, SC in the next 6 stitches, Ch 1, turn. Work 40 rows of SC across these 6 stitches (about 10 inches). Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Skip the next 10 stitches of the top band, and sew the end of the handle to the next 6 stitches of the band with the tapestry needle.
Handle 2: Join yarn to the top band directly opposite the first handle (count 16 stitches around from the first handle’s base on each side). Ch 1, SC in the next 6 stitches and work exactly as for Handle 1. Sew the end to the band, leaving 10 skipped stitches between the handles on this side too.
Weave in all ends.
Forget-Me-Not Flowers (make 9–12)
With yellow, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 SC into the ring, join with a slip stitch to the first SC. Pull the ring closed. (6 SC) Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
With blue (or white for variety), join yarn in any stitch.
Round 2: *Ch 2, work 2 DC in the next stitch, Ch 2, slip stitch in the next stitch,* repeat around — you will make 5 petals in 5 stitches; slip stitch in the last stitch to even it out. Fasten off and weave in the petal end, keeping the yellow tail for sewing.
Arrange the flowers scattered over the front of the bag (I did 7 on the front and 4 on the back) and sew each one on through the yellow center with its tail. Weave in ends.
Sophie’s Tips
- Cotton yarn is the secret to a market bag that keeps its shape — acrylic will stretch into a sad puddle by August. Ask me how I know.
- Count your mesh spaces every few rounds. Sixteen spaces, every round — if one goes missing, you’ll feel it in the finished bag.
- Make the flowers assembly-line style: all the yellow centers first, then all the petal rounds. It goes twice as fast.
Toss in your market list and go — this little blue beauty is ready for anything!
