Garden green spring crochet dress

# Garden Green Spring Dress Free Crochet Pattern

Every spring I get the urge to make something fresh and green, like my crochet hook is trying to match the garden outside. This dress is exactly that feeling in garment form — a fitted bodice that flows into a lacy, twirly skirt in the prettiest garden green. It is feminine, fun, and surprisingly wearable.

The bodice is worked in simple stitches so it fits nice and smooth, and then the skirt opens up into an airy lace pattern that moves beautifully. I wore mine to a garden party with a little cardigan over it and felt like a million bucks. The color just makes everyone happy!

  • Size G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • 1-inch button for the back closure (or a ribbon tie)
  • Stitch markers

  • Women’s size M — bust 36 inches, waist 30 inches, skirt length 22 inches from waist. Bodice is fitted with slight negative ease
  • The cotton blend has a little give

The Pattern

Bodice (worked top-down in the round)

Chain 132, join with sl st to form a ring.

Rnds 5–16: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join. (132 hdc)

Rnd 17: Ch 2, \*hdc in next 9 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from \* around, join. (120 hdc)

Rnd 18: Ch 2, \*hdc in next 8 sts, hdc2tog; repeat from \* around, join. (108 hdc)

Rnds 21–26: Ch 2, hdc in each st around, join. (84 hdc)

The bodice should now measure about 12 inches from the top edge. It will stretch to fit a 34–38 inch bust.

Lacy Skirt

Rnd 1 (increase round): Ch 3 (counts as dc), \*2 dc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from \* around, join. (126 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip 1 st, \*dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; repeat from \* around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. (63 dc, 63 ch-1 spaces)

Rnds 3–22: Sl st into the first ch-1 space, ch 4, \*dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat from \* around, join. Repeat this mesh round 20 times total. The skirt will flare naturally.

Rnd 23 (shell edging): Sl st into first ch-1 space, \*5 dc in next ch-1 space, sl st in next ch-1 space; repeat from \* around, join. Fasten off.

Back Opening and Straps

Cut the bodice open at the center back from the top edge down 6 inches and edge each side with 2 rows of sc. Sew on a button and make a chain loop, or thread a ribbon through the top row for ties.

Straps (make 2): Chain 60, sc back down the chain. Sew to the front and back top edges.

Weave in all ends and give the skirt a gentle block so the lace opens up.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Cotton blend is my top pick for this dress — it breathes, it drapes, and the lace definition is gorgeous.
  • Try the bodice on before starting the skirt. If it is snug, add a few rounds of hdc before the waist shaping.
  • A simple slip underneath makes the lacy skirt garden-party ready without any worry.

Twirl-approved and garden-party ready — enjoy every minute in it!
