Midnight star celestial dress

# Midnight Star Celestial Dress Free Crochet Pattern

Every little girl I know has gone through a “the night sky is magic” phase, and this dress was made for exactly that. Picture it: a fitted midnight-blue bodice with delicate spaghetti straps, then a dramatic full skirt that melts from deep navy at the waist through violet to silver gray at the hem — like twilight fading into starlight. Then you sew on crescent moons and stars in gold, silver, and white, and suddenly she is wearing the whole sky.

The construction is so much friendlier than it looks. You work the bodice top-down in simple single crochet rounds, release the skirt with one big increase round, then cruise in half double crochet through the back loop only for that soft, ribbed drape. The appliques get made separately at the end, so you can play with placement like you are arranging constellations. Plan on 14 to 18 hours of dreamy stitching.

What You’ll Need

  • DK weight cotton/acrylic or cotton/bamboo blend yarn, approximately 760 yards total: 660 yards in a navy-to-silver gradient or three coordinated solids for the main ombre colors, plus 50 yards gold, 35 yards silver, and a small amount of white for the appliques
  • US G/6 (4.0 mm) hook for the dress
  • US E/4 (3.5 mm) hook for the appliques
  • Stitch markers, yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape, blocking pins
  • Optional: 1/4 inch elastic for inside the top edge if you want extra security

Finished size:

  • Child size 4 to 5
  • Chest 22 inches around, waist 24 inches around, total length 19 inches, and about 72 inches of skirt sweep
  • Designed with 1 to 2 inches of positive ease at the chest — choose by the child’s actual chest measurement

Gauge:

  • Bodice — 18 single crochet stitches and 20 joined rounds = 4 inches after blocking. Skirt — 18 half double crochet stitches and 15 joined rounds = 4 inches after blocking. Match both so the dress keeps its intended fit and length

The Pattern

Bodice

With navy and the 4.0 mm hook, chain 100. Join with a slip stitch to the first chain, being careful not to twist.

Round 1: Chain 1, single crochet in each chain around, join. (100 sc)

Rounds 2–8: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, join. (100 sc each round)

Checkpoint: the top edge measures about 22 inches around.

Round 9: Chain 1, [single crochet in the next 24 stitches, 2 single crochet in the next stitch] 4 times, join. (104 sc)

Rounds 10–17: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, join. (104 sc each round)

Round 18: Chain 1, [single crochet in the next 25 stitches, 2 single crochet in the next stitch] 4 times, join. (108 sc)

Rounds 19–30: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, join. (108 sc each round)

Checkpoint: the bodice height is about 6 inches and the waist measures about 24 inches around.

Straps

Lay the bodice flat with the seam at center back. Mark the front strap points 11 stitches in from each side edge, and the back strap points directly opposite — leave 28 center-front stitches and 28 center-back stitches between the straps.

Join navy at a front mark. Chain 34 for a 7.5-inch strap, slip stitch to the matching back mark, turn, and work 34 single crochet back across the chain. Slip stitch to the front edge and fasten off. Repeat for the second strap. Fit tip: try the bodice on the child and add or remove chains before working the single crochet return row.

Skirt

Round 31 (Release Increase): Change to your dark navy or gradient start color. Chain 1, work 3 half double crochet in each stitch around, join. (324 hdc) This dramatic increase creates all the fullness.

Rounds 32–46 (Deep Sky): Chain 1, half double crochet in the back loop only in each stitch around, join. (324 hdc each round)

Rounds 47–58 (Violet Transition): Continue the gradient or change to muted violet. Chain 1, half double crochet in the back loop only in each stitch around, join. (324 hdc each round)

Rounds 59–76 (Silver Horizon): Continue the gradient or change to silver gray. Chain 1, half double crochet in the back loop only in each stitch around, join. (324 hdc each round)

Checkpoint: the skirt length from the waist is about 12.25 inches.

**Hem

Round 77:** Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, join. (324 sc)

**Hem

Round 78:** Chain 1, [single crochet in the next 9 stitches, chain 3, slip stitch in the first chain made (picot), single crochet in the next 9 stitches] 18 times, join with an invisible join. (324 sc + 18 picots)

Celestial Appliques

Make all of these before sewing so you can play with placement: 18 small stars, 8 mini stars, 3 crescent moons, and 1 larger moon, in gold, silver, and white with the 3.5 mm hook. Scatter them densely on the upper right bodice and taper down the skirt, keeping the back quieter — at least 1.5 inches between larger motifs so the folds stay soft.

Small 5-Point Star: Make a magic ring.

Round 1: chain 1, 10 sc in the ring, join. (10 sc)

Round 2: [chain 3, sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc in the next chain, skip the next sc on the ring, slip stitch in the next sc] 5 times. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Mini Star: Make a magic ring. [Chain 2, slip stitch in the ring] 5 times, pull the ring tight. Fasten off with a long tail.

Crescent Moon: Chain 16.

Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc in the next 2 chains, dc in the next 7 chains, hdc in the next 2 chains, sc in the last 3 chains. (15 sts)

Row 2: chain 1, turn, slip stitch in the first 2 stitches, sc in the next 2 stitches, hdc in the next 3 stitches, dc in the next 4 stitches, hdc in the next 2 stitches, sc in the next stitch, slip stitch in the last stitch. (15 sts) Fasten off.

Large Moon: Work the crescent moon pattern with the 4.0 mm hook and add one extra row of surface slip stitch along the outer curve for a bolder shape.

Placement guide: Pin every applique before sewing. The largest crescent goes on the right bodice, one crescent on the lower left skirt, one on the lower right skirt, and the large moon near the skirt front.

Finishing

Weave in all ends on the wrong side, splitting yarn plies where possible for security. Steam block lightly or wet block flat to the measurements — don’t stretch the top edge wider than gauge. Sew the appliques with matching thread or yarn tails using small whipstitches around each edge. Optional: sew soft elastic inside the top edge, stretching it only enough to stabilize the neckline.

Sophie’s Tips

  • If the skirt ruffles outward, your hdc row gauge may be short or your yarn too crisp — steam block downward, or drop the release increase to 2 hdc per stitch next time.
  • If appliques curl, block each motif under a damp cloth before sewing. A flat star sews down so much more neatly.
  • The ombre works just as beautifully in three solid colors as in a gradient cake. Pick whichever makes your heart happy.

She is going to twirl until she is dizzy — go make the dress that holds the whole night sky!
