Fern Forest Fairy Dress Free Crochet Pattern

Green gradient fairy dress with leaf lace

# Fern Forest Fairy Dress Free Crochet Pattern

I’ve been dreaming about this dress for ages, friends — something that feels like it belongs in an enchanted forest. A fitted bodice in deep forest green with raised leaf texture, then a skirt that drifts from emerald through sage into natural cream, ending in delicate pointed lace tips. When it’s blocked and moving, the handkerchief hem genuinely looks alive.

Fair warning: this is an advanced project and a real time investment — roughly 18 to 25 hours for the bodice, 35 to 50 for the skirt, plus finishing. But every bobble and lace repeat is worth it. If you’ve been waiting for a show-stopping garment to flex your crochet muscles on, this is the one.

What You’ll Need

  • DK weight yarn (CYCA 3) in three colors (or one gradient skein of at least 1,400 yards / 1,280 m transitioning deep green through sage to cream, plus solid deep green for the bodice):
  • Yarn A (deep forest green): 600 yards / 550 meters
  • Yarn B (sage green): 400 yards / 366 meters
  • Yarn C (cream): 500 yards / 457 meters
  • Choose a yarn with crisp stitch definition — avoid fuzzy or halo yarns that would hide the texture and lace.
  • US E-4 / 3.5 mm hook (bodice texture)
  • US F-5 / 3.75 mm hook (skirt lace)
  • Tapestry needle, at least 12 stitch markers, blocking mats and rust-proof pins, measuring tape
  • Optional: 1 yard / 91 cm of 1/4 inch / 6 mm satin ribbon in sage green for strap reinforcement

Finished size:

  • Size Medium — bust 36 inches / 91.5 cm
  • Waist 28 inches / 71 cm
  • Hip 54 inches / 137 cm at the fullest skirt point
  • Bodice length 14 inches / 35.5 cm (shoulder strap base to waist)
  • Skirt length 22 inches / 56 cm (waist to longest hem point)
  • Total dress length 36 inches / 91.5 cm

The Pattern

Gauge (do not skip — fit depends on it):

  • – Bodice (E-4 hook, Yarn A): 18 sts and 20 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in half double crochet. One 10-stitch leaf panel = 2.25 in / 5.7 cm wide.
  • Skirt (F-5 hook, Yarn B): one 16-stitch lace repeat = 3 in / 7.6 cm wide
  • 6 rounds of lace = 2 in / 5 cm tall

Special stitches:

  • Bobble (bob): Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops. Repeat 4 more times in the same st (6 loops on hook). Yo, pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to close (the ch-1 doesn’t count as a st). Pushes to the RS.
  • FPdc / BPdc: front post / back post double crochet around the post of the indicated stitch.
  • Lace V-st: (dc, ch 2, dc) in same st or space.
  • Leaf panel (10 sts):

Row 1 (RS): BPdc, FPdc, FPdc, bob, FPdc, FPdc, BPdc, hdc in next 3.

Row 2 (WS): hdc 3, BPdc, BPdc, hdc, BPdc, BPdc, hdc, BPdc.

Row 3 (RS): BPdc, FPdc 2, bob, FPdc 2, BPdc, hdc 3.

Row 4 (WS): hdc 3, BPdc, BPdc 2, hdc, BPdc 2, BPdc. Repeat Rows 1-4.

Bodice (worked flat, top-down in two mirrored cups)

With Yarn A and the E-4 hook, ch 5.

Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across. (3 hdc)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st throughout the bodice), hdc across. (3 hdc)

Rows 3-20: Repeat Rows 1-2’s rhythm with shaping: on every RS row, work 2 hdc in the first and last st; on WS rows, hdc across. (5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 hdc)

Row 21 (RS, begin leaf texture): Ch 2, hdc in first 3 sts, work Leaf Panel Row 1 over next 10 sts, hdc in remaining 8 sts. (21 sts) Continue in pattern, keeping the leaf panel centered and working hdc on either side, until the cup measures 7 in / 18 cm from the strap. Work the second cup as a mirror image. Join the cups at center front with a row of hdc across both (42 sts), then continue the body downward: work 3 more leaf panel repeats flanked by hdc, increasing 1 st at each side edge every 4th row until you have 62 sts (28 in / 71 cm waist). Work even until the bodice measures 14 in / 35.5 cm from the strap base. Seam the side edges.

Straps: With Yarn A, ch 40 per strap; sc back along the chain. Sew to the top corners of each cup, reinforcing with the satin ribbon on the wrong side if you like.

Skirt (worked in joined rounds, top-down)

With Yarn B and the F-5 hook, join at the waist. Setup round: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st around, increasing evenly to 192 sts — that’s 12 repeats of the 16-stitch lace pattern. Join.

Lace repeat (16 sts): Ch 3, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 5, sk 4 sts, sc in next st, ch 3, sk 2 sts, dc in next st; then working back into the ch-5 arch: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the arch. Repeat this 16-stitch unit 12 times around.

Rounds 1-12: Work the lace repeat around (12 repeats, 192 sts) in Yarn A. Switch to Yarn B after Round 12, and switch to Yarn C after Round 28 — join each new color with a standing stitch at the round join and weave ends on the WS. Increase 12 sts evenly every 6th round so the skirt flares to 54 in / 137 cm at its fullest. Continue until the skirt measures 20 in / 51 cm from the waist.

Pointed Hem Tips (12 tips)

At each of the 12 lace repeat base arches, work one tip: sl st to the first ch-sp, ch 4 (counts as tr), 4 tr in same sp, sl st to next sp; then sl st into the 2nd tr, ch 6, sk 2 tr, sl st in center tr, ch 6, sl st in last worked sp. Fasten off. The tips bring the longest hem points to 22 in / 56 cm from the waist.

Block aggressively — pin every hem tip individually and let dry completely before wearing.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Wash and block your gauge swatch exactly the way you’ll treat the finished dress before measuring. DK cotton and wool blends can grow a surprising amount.
  • Join new gradient colors with a standing stitch at the round join and weave the ends on the wrong side — carrying yarn through the lace will show.
  • Place a stitch marker at the start of every lace repeat for the first few rounds. Twelve repeats is a lot to count by eye, and one missed repeat throws off the whole flare.
