The Pattern

Granny Squares (make 12)

Vary the centers: 4 green, 4 pink, 4 yellow, all with cream outer rounds.

Round 1: With the center color, make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as DC), 2 DC into the ring, Ch 2, *3 DC into the ring, Ch 2,* repeat 3 times, join. Fasten off.

Round 2: Join cream in any Ch-2 space. Ch 3, 2 DC in the same space, Ch 2, 3 DC in the same space, *Ch 1, (3 DC, Ch 2, 3 DC) in the next Ch-2 space,* repeat around, Ch 1, join.

Round 3: Continue in cream, working corners in corners and 3 DC in each Ch-1 space. Join. Fasten off.

Each square about 4.5 inches.

Assembly

Arrange the 12 squares in a 3-wide by 4-tall grid, distributing the center colors like flowers in a garden — no two matching centers touching. Whipstitch with cream. Fold and seam the sides and bottom.

Handles (make 2)

With green, Ch 8. Work 65 rows of SC across 7 stitches. Sew to the top edge.

Weave in all ends.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Distribute the colors like a real garden — mixed and natural, not in rows.
  • Cream joins keep the whole tote light and fresh.
  • Add tiny flower appliques for an extra garden touch.

Hello, spring — the freshest tote in the garden!
