Sage Wildflower Drawstring Bag – Quick and Easy Pattern

Sage wildflower drawstring bag

Sage wildflower drawstring bag

This bag is my love letter to late-summer meadows! A soft sage green pouch dotted with tiny wildflowers in cream, blush, lavender, and butter yellow — and the sweetest drawstring top that cinches closed with a tug. It holds your phone, a small wallet, sunglasses, and a crochet hook or two (obviously).

The body is just relaxing rounds of double crochet worked from the bottom up, and the flowers are quick little motifs you sew on at the end. It’s the kind of project that looks impressive but is secretly very chill.

What You’ll Need

  • Main Color (MC): Sage green worsted weight cotton yarn, approximately 220 yards
  • Small amounts of worsted cotton in cream, blush pink, lavender, and butter yellow for the flowers (about 10 yards each)
  • US Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle, scissors, stitch markers

Finished size: Approximately 9 inches wide by 10 inches tall. Drawstring cords measure approximately 30 inches each.

The Pattern

Bag Body

With MC, make a magic ring.

Bag cinched closed on a table

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 9 dc into the ring. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. (10 dc)

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join. (20 dc)

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around. Join. (30 dc)

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around. Join. (40 dc)

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around. Join. (50 dc)

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around. Join. (60 dc)

Rounds 7–24: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. (60 dc each round)

Round 25 (eyelet round): Ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next 4 sts, repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, skip 1 st. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. (48 dc, 12 ch-1 spaces)

Rounds 26–27: Ch 3, dc in each dc and each ch-1 space around. Join. (60 dc each round)

Round 28: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. Fasten off.

Drawstrings (Make 2)

With MC, ch 120. Fasten off, leaving 4-inch tails. Knot each tail tightly so the chain can’t unravel. Thread one cord through the eyelets starting at the front center and working all the way around; thread the second cord starting at the back center. Pull the ends of each cord to opposite sides and knot them together — now the bag cinches from both sides.

Wildflowers (Make 8)

Make 2 each in cream, blush pink, lavender, and butter yellow.

Make a magic ring. Round 1: Ch 1, (ch 2, 2 dc into the ring, ch 2, sl st into the ring) — repeat from * a total of 5 times. (5 petals) Pull the ring snug. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

With a short piece of contrasting yarn (I use butter yellow on the pastel flowers and sage on the yellow ones), stitch a tiny French knot or 3 small straight stitches in the center of each flower.

Sew the flowers onto the bag body in a scattered meadow pattern — I cluster three near the top, three around the middle, and two near the bottom, mixing the colors.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Cinch the drawstrings, and your meadow is ready to go!

Sophie’s Tips

  • Cotton is ideal here — it holds the round shape and the drawstring slides smoothly through cotton eyelets.
  • Make the bag taller by adding more even rounds before the eyelet round; each 3 rounds adds about 1 inch.
  • Turn it into a gift bag: make it in cream with red flowers for the holidays!

I hope this little bag carries something wonderful for you. Happy crocheting, friend!
