Gingerbread Christmas wreath on the front door

Oh friends, this wreath is basically Christmas cookies for your front door! I built mine from 32 little crocheted leaves covered in the sweetest motifs — socks, orange slices, berries, a tiny house, a star, a gingerbread man, a cozy sweater, and candy pieces. It smells like holiday spirit even though you can’t eat a single stitch of it.

The best part is how customizable this one is. You can use up all your little yarn leftovers for the motifs, and every leaf is quick to make, so this becomes the perfect couch project for December evenings. Hang it up and I promise your guests will be talking about it before they even ring the bell.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight (#4) yarn in brown, green, red, white, orange, yellow, and a bit of black for faces
  • Size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook
  • 10-inch foam wreath form
  • Tapestry needle
  • A small handful of polyfill for the berries
  • Ribbon for a hanging loop

Finished size: Approximately 14 inches across once all the motifs are attached.

The Pattern

The Wreath Base

With green yarn, chain 120 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring, being careful not to twist.

Rounds 1-5: SC in each chain around (120 SC). Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Slip this green tube over your foam wreath form and whipstitch the long edges together around the back. This is your leafy base.

The 32 Leaves

This is the part that gives the wreath its full, lush look — 32 little leaves, evenly spaced around the ring.

Leaf (make 32):

Chain 11. SC in the 2nd chain from the hook, HDC in the next 2 chains, DC in the next 4 chains, HDC in the next 2 chains, SC in the last chain. Now work back along the other side of the chain: SC in the last chain, HDC in the next 2, DC in the next 4, HDC in the next 2, SC in the last. Slip stitch to the first SC and fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Pin the leaves around the wreath base, slightly overlapping, and sew each one in place with the tail.

The Gingerbread Man

He’s the star of the show! Worked in brown:

Body: Magic ring, 6 SC into the ring.
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch (12 SC). Rounds 3-4: SC in each stitch (12 SC). Fasten off.
Head: Magic ring, 6 SC.
Round 2: 2 SC in each (12 SC).
Round 3: SC in each (12 SC).
Round 4: SC decrease around (6 SC). Fasten off, stuff lightly.
Arms (make 2): Chain 6, SC in 2nd chain from hook and across (5 SC). Fasten off.
Legs (make 2): Chain 7, SC in 2nd chain from hook and across (6 SC). Fasten off.

Sew the head to the top of the body, arms to the sides, and legs to the bottom. Embroider two black eyes, a smile in red, and three white buttons down the belly with yarn.

The Sweet Motifs

Star: Magic ring; \*[chain 3, DC into ring, chain 3, slip stitch into ring]\* five times. Pull the ring tight and fasten off. Make 2 in yellow.

Orange slices (make 3): With orange yarn: magic ring, 6 SC.
Round 2: 2 SC in each (12 SC).
Round 3: With white yarn, SC in each (12 SC). Fasten off.

Berries (make 8): With red yarn: magic ring, 6 SC.
Round 2: 2 SC in each (12 SC). Rounds 3-4: SC in each (12 SC). Stuff lightly, then decrease around (6 SC) and fasten off.

Tiny house: With brown yarn, chain 11. Rows 1-8: SC across (10 SC), chain 1, turn. For the roof, switch to red:
Row 9: SC decrease, SC in next 6, SC decrease, chain 1, turn (8 SC).
Row 10: SC decrease, SC in next 4, SC decrease (6 SC).
Row 11: SC decrease across (3 SC). Fasten off.

Sweater (make 2): With red yarn, chain 11. Rows 1-6: SC across (10 SC), chain 1, turn. For each sleeve: chain 5 at the side, SC back down and across the top row, chain 5, SC across to the other side, fasten off. Embroider a white snowflake on the front.

Socks (make 2): Chain 9. Rows 1-5: SC across (8 SC), chain 1, turn. For the heel: chain 1, turn, SC in first 4 stitches only for 3 rows. Then SC across all 8 stitches for 2 more rows, decrease across (4 SC), fasten off. Make one red, one white.

Candy pieces (make 4): With red and white yarn held in stripes: chain 13, alternating colors every 3 chains. SC in 2nd chain from hook and across. Twist the strip slightly and tie off the ends with white yarn to look like wrapped candy ends.

Assembly

Arrange all your motifs over the leaves — I like the gingerbread man right at the top, the house and sweater on the sides, and the berries and candy tucked into the gaps. Sew or hot-glue everything in place, attach a ribbon loop at the top, and hang it proudly.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Wind your leaves and motifs first, then play with the arrangement before sewing anything down — you’ll get a much nicer layout.
  • If you want this to last for years, give the whole wreath a very light spritz of fabric stiffener once it’s assembled.
  • Running low on green? Mix two shades of green for the leaves — it actually looks more natural and festive.

Go make your door the sweetest one on the block!
