# DIY Crochet Superstitious Black Cat Wreath Free Crochet Pattern

If a black cat crosses your path, is it good luck or bad luck? Around here, we decided it’s the BEST luck — especially when it’s crocheted! This big, bold black cat wreath greets all my trick-or-treaters with those glowing eyes and a fabulous orange-and-black striped bow. It’s dramatic, it’s fun, and at 18 inches wide it’s impossible to miss from the street.
The cat face sits right at the top of the wreath like it’s peeking over at your guests, and the striped bow underneath gives it that finished, boutique look. Let’s make some Halloween magic!
What You’ll Need
- Worsted weight yarn in black (large amount), orange, white, pink, and yellow-green for the eyes
- 16-inch foam wreath form
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook (a slightly bigger hook keeps the black fabric from getting too stiff)
- Tapestry needle and pins for arranging
- Ribbon or wire for hanging
Finished size:
- Approximately 18 inches wide and 25 inches tall, including the bow
The Pattern
Worked in US crochet terms.
Wreath Base
With black, join yarn to the wreath form with a slip stitch. Single crochet snugly and evenly all the way around until the form is completely covered — black on black is forgiving, so just keep the stitches tight and even. Join and fasten off. The covered ring should measure about 18 inches across.
Cat Head
With black, make a magic ring, chain 2 (does not count as a stitch), 8 DC into the ring, join. (8 DC)
Round 2:
- 2 DC in each stitch around, join. (16 DC)
Round 3: *DC in next stitch, 2 DC in next stitch* around, join. (24 DC)
Round 4: *DC in next 2 stitches, 2 DC in next stitch* around, join. (32 DC)
Round 5: *DC in next 3 stitches, 2 DC in next stitch* around, join. (40 DC)
Fasten off. The head measures about 8 inches across.
Ears (make 2)
With black, chain 8.
Row 1: SC in 2nd chain from hook and each across, chain 1, turn. (7 SC)
Row 2: SC2tog, SC in next 3, SC2tog, chain 1, turn. (5 SC)
Row 3: SC2tog, SC in next 1, SC2tog, chain 1, turn. (3 SC)
Row 4: SC3tog. Fasten off.
Inner ear (make 2): With pink, chain 5. SC in 2nd chain from hook and each across (4 SC), then SC2tog twice (2 SC), then SC2tog (1 SC). Fasten off. Sew one pink inner ear onto each black ear, then sew the ears to the top of the head.
Face
- Eyes (make 2): With white, magic ring, 6 SC into the ring, join. (6 SC) With black, magic ring, 6 SC into the ring for pupils — or use yellow-green for the iris with a black pupil on top for extra spookiness. Sew the eyes onto the face, slightly angled for mischief.
- Nose: With pink, chain 4, SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next, SC in last — a tiny triangle. Sew below and between the eyes.
- Whiskers: Cut 6 strands of white yarn, each about 5 inches long. Pull 3 through each side of the muzzle with the tapestry needle and knot them at the back.

Striped Bow
Striped panel (make 2 for loops, 2 for tails): With orange, chain 20.
Rows 1–6: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn. (20 SC) Change to black.
Rows 7–12: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn. (20 SC) Change to orange.
Rows 13–18: SC in each stitch across, chain 1, turn. (20 SC)
Fasten off. You now have a striped rectangle about 6 inches wide and 5 inches tall. Make 4 total.
Loops: Fold two panels in half widthwise and cinch the center tightly with black yarn to form bow loops.
Tails: Cut the other two panels into a fishtail point at one end (chain-stitch a V or simply cut and seal). Cinch the tops.
Knot: With black, chain 10, SC back across (9 SC), wrap around the cinched centers and sew to secure.
Assembly
1. Sew the cat head to the top center of the wreath ring, overlapping it slightly so it looks like the cat is peeking over.
2. Position the striped bow just below the cat’s chin and sew it firmly — the loops angled outward, tails hanging down.
3. The full piece should measure about 18 inches wide and 25 inches tall from the top of the ears to the bottom of the bow tails.
4. Attach a sturdy hanger to the back top of the ring.
Sophie’s Tips
- Black yarn is notoriously hard to see — work near a bright lamp or lay a white towel on your lap so you can actually see your stitches.
- Slightly angle the ears outward instead of straight up; it gives the cat a much friendlier, cuter expression.
- Fluff the bow loops with your fingers after hanging — gravity does half the styling work for you.
Greet every ghost and goblin in style — happy haunting!
