Crochet Christmas Cactus With Pink Blooms

Confession time: I am not great at keeping plants alive. No judgment, right? That is exactly why this crocheted Christmas cactus with its gorgeous pink blooms belongs in my home — and probably yours too. It needs zero maintenance and zero upkeep, which is absolutely my kind of plant. The soft pink flowers against the deep green segments are just so pretty, and it looks sweet on a sunny windowsill all winter long.

This one is a classic potted shape, so it works up a little faster than the trailing versions. A lovely weekend project!

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted weight yarn in leaf green (about 250 yards)
  • Small amounts of light pink, hot pink, and yellow yarn for the flowers
  • Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
  • A 4-inch decorative pot
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyester fiberfill

Finished size: Approximately 10 inches tall in a 4-inch pot.

The Pattern

Segments (Make 40)

Chain 8. SC in the 2nd chain from the hook, SC in the next 5 chains, 3 SC in the last chain. Working down the other side: SC in the next 5 chains, 2 SC in the last chain, join. (16 SC)

Round 2:

  • Chain 1, SC in the next 6 stitches, 2 SC in each of the next 3 stitches, SC in the next 5 stitches, 2 SC in each of the next 2 stitches, join. (22 SC)

Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail for joining.

Stems (Make 12)

Sew segments end to end:

  • 4 stems of 4 segments
  • 5 stems of 3 segments
  • 3 stems of 2 segments

Pink Blooms (Make 10)

With light pink yarn, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Chain 1, work 10 SC into the ring, join. (10 SC)

Round 2 (inner petals): *Chain 2, DC in the next stitch, chain 2, slip stitch in the next stitch*, repeat from * to * 5 times. (5 small petals)

Round 3 (outer petals): Join hot pink yarn in any slip stitch of Round 2. *Chain 3, 2 DC in the next stitch, chain 3, slip stitch in the next slip stitch*, repeat from * to * 5 times. (5 larger petals)

With yellow, stitch 3 tiny chain-3 loops into the flower center for stamens. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Soil Disc

With brown yarn, make a magic ring, chain 1, work 10 SC into the ring, join. (10 SC)

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch, join. (20 SC)
Round 3: Chain 1, *SC in the next stitch, 2 SC in the next*, repeat around, join. (30 SC)

Fasten off.

Assembly

1. Fill the pot with fiberfill and press the soil disc on top.

2. Sew the 4-segment stems into the center, then ring them with the 3-segment stems, and finish with the 2-segment stems around the edge.

3. Sew the pink blooms to the stem tips — I like to cluster two or three together at the top for a “just bloomed” look, then scatter the rest.

4. Give the whole plant a gentle fluff and shape with your fingers.

Sophie’s Tips

  • The two-tone pink petals (light inside, hot pink outside) are what make these blooms look realistic — do not skip the second round!
  • Tuck one bloom slightly behind a stem instead of placing them all on tips; depth makes it believable.
  • This makes a wonderful gift for the friend who kills every plant she touches. (We all have one. I am one.)
