Christmas Poinsettia Granny Square Bag Free Crochet Pattern

Christmas poinsettia granny square bag with red petals and green leaves

# Christmas Poinsettia Granny Square Bag Free Crochet Pattern

If there is one flower that says Christmas to me, it is the poinsettia — and this bag is absolutely covered in them. Each granny square blooms with layered red petals, green leaves peeking out from behind, and a golden center, all squared off in snowy white. Joined together, they make the most festive bag I own.

The motif looks intricate, but it is really just three quick rounds: a gold center, red petals worked into that center, and green leaves worked behind the petals. Squaring off is plain double crochet. Make eight squares, join them into front and back panels, add a gusset and handles, and you will have a holiday bag that turns heads at every Christmas market.

The Pattern

The Poinsettia Square (Make 8)

Center (gold): Make a magic ring. Chain 1, work 8 sc into the ring. Pull closed and join with a slip stitch to the first sc. Fasten off gold. (8 sc)

Red petals: Join red with a slip stitch in any center sc. In the same stitch, work one petal: chain 6, then working back down the chain — sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc in the next chain, dc in the next 2 chains, hdc in the next chain — then slip stitch back into the same center sc. Repeat this petal in each of the remaining 7 center stitches. (8 red petals) Fasten off red.

Green leaves (behind the petals): Join green with a slip stitch in the space between any two red petals at the center. Work one leaf: chain 7, then working back down — sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, hdc in the next chain, dc in the next 2 chains, hdc in the next chain, sc in the last chain — then slip stitch into the space between the next two petals. Repeat all the way around so one green leaf peeks out behind each pair of red petals. (8 green leaves) Fasten off green.

**Squaring off (white),

round 1:** Join white with a slip stitch in the tip of any red petal. Chain 3 (counts as dc). Work 2 dc in the same tip, then 3 dc in the tip of the next petal, then (3 dc, chain 2, 3 dc) in the tip of the next petal — this forms a corner. Continue around: 3 dc in each of the next 2 petal tips, corner in the next — for 4 corners total (in petals 1, 3, 5, and 7) with one plain 3-dc group in each edge petal (petals 2, 4, 6, 8). Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain-3. (12 groups of 3 dc, 4 chain-2 corners)

**Squaring off (white),

round 2:** Slip stitch into the next corner chain-2 space. Chain 3 (counts as dc), work (2 dc, chain 2, 3 dc) in the same corner, then dc in each stitch across the side to the next corner; repeat around all four sides. Join with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Checkpoint: each finished square should measure about 6 inches (15 cm). Give the squares a light block so the petals lie nicely.

Joining the Bag

Arrange 4 squares in a 2-by-2 grid for the front panel and 4 more for the back panel. With white and a yarn needle, whipstitch the squares together along their edges, right sides facing out — join the two squares in each row first, then join the two rows. Repeat for the back panel.

The Gusset (Sides and Bottom)

With white, chain 11.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across. Turn. (10 sc)

Rows 2–60: Chain 1, turn, sc in each stitch across. (10 sc each row)

Checkpoint: the strip should be about 2.5 inches wide and long enough to run from the top of one side panel, down across the bottom, and up to the top of the other side — about 28 inches (71 cm). Adjust the row count to match your actual panels.

Pin the gusset around the front panel (up one side, across the bottom, up the other side) and whipstitch it on with white. Repeat with the back panel, leaving the top edges open.

The Top Edging

With white, join at any top edge stitch and work 3 rounds of sc evenly around the entire top opening (about 88 stitches per round), joining each round with a slip stitch. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

The Handles (Make 2)

With red, chain 55.

Rows 1–3: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across (54 sc). Chain 1, turn, and work 2 more rows of sc. Fasten off, leaving long tails.

Sew one handle to the front panel and one to the back panel, setting the ends about 2.5 inches in from each side edge and stitching each end down firmly through the top edging with several passes.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Work the red petals with a relaxed hand — tight petals cup inward and hide the gold center, which is the prettiest part.
  • Pin the gusset before you sew a single stitch. Easing a long strip around corners without pins is how puckers happen.
  • Tuck your ends in as you finish each square rather than saving them all for the end. Future you will be very grateful.

Merry making, friend — this bag is pure Christmas joy!
