# Poinsettia Christmas Decor Piece Free Crochet Pattern
This is the showpiece, friends — a whole potted poinsettia plant that will never wilt, never need watering, and never leave you sweeping dead leaves off the windowsill in January. I set mine on the kitchen windowsill where the morning light hits it, and I swear guests try to smell it.
It’s a bigger project with several parts — the pot, the blooms, the leaves, the stems — but each part is simple on its own, and putting it all together feels like arranging real flowers. Take it one piece at a time over a cozy week of evenings and you’ll have a true masterpiece.
What You’ll Need
- Worsted weight yarn in terracotta (pot), dark brown (soil), red, green, and gold
- Size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Fiberfill for light stuffing
- Three 6-inch pieces of floral wire (optional, for poseable stems)
Finished size: Approximately 8 to 9 inches tall in the pot.
The Pattern
Worked in US crochet terms throughout.
Pot
With terracotta:
Round 1:
- Make a magic ring, chain 1, 8 SC into the ring, join. (8 SC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join. (16 SC)
Round 3: *SC in next stitch, 2 SC in next stitch* around, join. (24 SC)
Round 4: *SC in next 2 stitches, 2 SC in next stitch* around, join. (32 SC)
Round 5: Working in back loops only, SC in each stitch around, join. (32 SC)
Rounds 6–10: SC in each stitch around, join. (32 SC per round)
Round 11 (rim): *SC in next 3 stitches, 2 SC in next stitch* around, join. (40 SC)
Round 12: SC in each stitch around, join. (40 SC)
Fasten off. Stuff the pot very lightly with fiberfill so it holds its shape.
Soil
With dark brown, make a magic ring, chain 1, 8 SC into the ring. Increase exactly like Rounds 2–4 of the pot until you have 32 SC. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. You’ll sew this disc just inside the pot rim at the end.
Blooms (make 2 large, 1 small)
Large bloom — outer petals (make 8): With red, chain 12. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2, DC in next 3, TR in next 3, (TR, chain 2, TR) in last chain, then mirror along the other side: TR in next 3, DC in next 3, HDC in next 2, SC in last. Join, fasten off with a tail.
Large bloom — inner petals (make 6): With red, chain 9 and work the same shape slightly smaller: SC, HDC 2, DC 2, TR 2, tip, mirror back.
Small bloom: Make 6 outer petals with a chain-9 foundation and 5 inner petals with a chain-7 foundation.
Centers (make 3): With gold, magic ring, 8 SC into the ring, join; then *chain 3, 3-DC bobble, chain 3, slip stitch* 4 times around for berries. Sew one center into each bloom after layering outer petals, inner petals offset, and center.
Leaves (make 5)
With green, chain 11. SC in 2nd chain from hook, HDC in next 2, DC in next 4, HDC in next 2, (HDC, chain 2, HDC) in last chain, mirror along the other side. Join, fasten off with a tail.
Stems (make 3)
With green, magic ring, 6 SC into the ring. SC in each stitch around for 20 rounds (about 6 inches). Slide floral wire inside if using. Sew one bloom to the top of each stem.
Assembly
1. Arrange the 3 stems at different heights in the pot — tallest in the center.
2. Sew the 5 leaves around the base of the stems, fanning outward to fill the pot.
3. Position the soil disc inside the pot rim over the stem bases and sew it to the inner wall of the pot with the brown tail.
4. Fluff the petals outward with your fingers and step back to admire your forever plant!
Sophie’s Tips
- Vary the reds — one bloom in true red, one in deep burgundy — and the whole plant looks incredibly lifelike.
- If the pot wobbles, add a flat circle of cardboard inside the base before stuffing. Nobody will ever know.
