Crochet poinsettia pot

I love real poinsettias, but I have a confession: I am the person who forgets to water them. So I made the kind that never wilts, never drops a leaf, and looks just as cheerful in February as it does on Christmas morning. This little pot of crocheted poinsettias — red blooms, green leaves, sunny yellow centers — sits on my windowsill all season long.

It uses red, green, and yellow yarn to build each part, and once the pieces are made, arranging the bouquet is the fun part. No green thumb required.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in red (about 120 yards), green (about 80 yards), yellow (small amount), and terracotta brown (about 60 yards)
  • Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Small piece of floral foam and 3 wooden dowels or sticks (about 10″ long), or a small real flowerpot

Finished size: About 12″ tall overall, pot about 4″ wide.

Poinsettia Flowers (make 3)

With red, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join. (6 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sc)

Round 3 (petals): *(Ch 9, starting in 2nd ch from hook work: sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st, sl st — 8 sts down the chain — then sl st in the next base st)* 12 times. (12 petals)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Inner petals: Join red in the center ring. *(Ch 7, starting in 2nd ch work: sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st down the chain, sl st in next center st)* 6 times. (6 smaller petals)

Center: With yellow, make a magic ring. Ch 1, 8 sc into ring, join. Fasten off and sew the yellow center over the middle of the flower.

Leaves (make 6)

With green, chain 12. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next, dc in next 4, hdc in next, sc in next, sl st in last ch — then work back down the other side of the chain mirroring the stitches (sl st, sc, hdc, dc 4, hdc, sc). Join with a sl st. Chain 6 for the leaf stem, fasten off.

Stems and Assembly

Wrap each dowel tightly with green yarn from top to bottom, securing the ends with a dab of glue or a few stitches. Sew one flower to the top of each dowel, then sew 2 leaves to each stem just below the flower.

Push the floral foam into the pot and arrange the three stems at different heights — tall in the back, shorter in front — tucking the leaves so the bouquet looks full.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Make the petals slightly different lengths by chaining 8, 9, or 10 — real poinsettias are gloriously uneven.
  • If your flowers flop, give each petal a quick pass with a warm iron under a pressing cloth; the stitches crisp right up.
  • This bouquet makes the sweetest hostess gift — it arrives “in bloom” and stays that way forever.

A poinsettia that never needs watering — now that is my kind of gardening!
