Crocheted wreath covered in different-sized eyeballs

How about covering a whole wreath in crocheted eyeballs for a truly spooky vibe? The different sizes create such wonderful depth — big googly ones, tiny beady ones, all staring in different directions. It’s eerie, it’s hilarious, and I love this one more than I probably should. Every eyeball took me about ten minutes, and the whole thing came together in one cozy weekend.

The base is a simple dark ring so those white eyeballs really pop. Then we make eyeballs in three sizes — large, medium, and small — and cover the wreath until it looks like it’s watching everyone who walks by. Which, let’s be honest, is the entire point.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in white, black, and dark purple
  • Size G crochet hook
  • 10-inch foam wreath ring
  • Polyester fiberfill
  • Tapestry needle
  • Hot glue gun or straight pins

Finished size: Approximately 14 inches across the finished wreath.

The Pattern

Wreath Base

With dark purple yarn, chain 12, SC in second chain from hook and across, chain 1, turn. (11 SC)

Work even rows until the strip wraps your ring snugly (about 32 inches). Fasten off and sew the strip around the ring.

Large Eyeball (make 6)

With white yarn:

Round 1: Magic ring, chain 1, work 6 SC into the ring. Join. (6 SC)

Round 2: Chain 1, 2 SC in each stitch around. Join. (12 SC)

Round 3: Chain 1, (SC in next, 2 SC in next) around. Join. (18 SC)

Rounds 4-5: Chain 1, SC in each stitch around. Join. (18 SC)

Round 6: Chain 1, (SC in next, SC2tog) around. Join. Stuff. (12 SC)

Round 7: Chain 1, SC2tog around. Join and fasten off, closing the hole. (6 SC)

Pupil: with black yarn, magic ring, chain 1, work 8 SC into the ring. Join and sew to the front of the eyeball.

Medium Eyeball (make 8)

Work the same as the large eyeball but stop after Round 5, then decrease: chain 1, (SC in next, SC2tog) around, join (12 SC), stuff, then chain 1, SC2tog around, join and close (6 SC). Add a black pupil of 6 SC.

Small Eyeball (make 12)

Work Rounds 1-3 of the large eyeball, then chain 1, (SC in next, SC2tog) around, join (12 SC), stuff, chain 1, SC2tog around, join and close (6 SC). Add a black pupil of 6 SC.

Assembly

Arrange the eyeballs on the wreath before attaching anything — cluster a few large ones as the “main” eyes, then fill gaps with medium and small ones. Turn some pupils sideways or upward so they’re not all staring the same way (much creepier). Glue or pin them in place.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Make pupils in different positions — up, sideways, cross-eyed — it gives the wreath a delightfully unhinged personality.
  • Add one or two bloodshot eyeballs by stitching a few red yarn veins on the white part. Subtle, spooky, perfect.
  • Leftover eyeballs make the best quick Halloween appliqués for hats, treat bags, or a garland.

Have a hauntingly wonderful Halloween — and remember, this wreath sees everything!
