# Spring Garden Granny Tote Bag Free Crochet Pattern

If a garden could be a tote bag, this would be it. Soft greens, petal pinks, and sunny centers — a whole flower bed made of granny squares, and sturdy enough to actually carry your stuff. I use mine for the farmer’s market and I get compliments every single time. One woman followed me down the produce aisle to ask about it. True story.

It’s eleven granny squares joined into a tote with a fabric-free, all-crochet construction — the squares ARE the bag. The straps are simple braided chains, and the whole thing works up in a weekend if you’re a determined hooker like me.

Flower Granny Square (make 11)

With Butter Yellow, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as DC), 11 DC into the ring, join. (12 DC)

Round 2 (petals): Join Petal Pink in any stitch, chain 3, DC in same stitch, *2 DC in next stitch*, repeat around, join. (24 DC)

Round 3: Join Leaf Green in any stitch, chain 3, 2 DC in same stitch, *skip 2 stitches, (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) in next stitch — corner made — skip 2 stitches, 3 DC in next stitch*, repeat 3 more times, ending with 3 DC in the last side space, join. (4 corners)

Round 4: Join Cream in any corner space, chain 3, (2 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) in same space, *3 DC in each side space across, (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) in next corner space*, repeat around, join.

Round 5: Repeat Round 4. Fasten off. Square measures 6.5 inches.

Assembly

1. Front and back: Join 4 squares into a 2-by-2 panel for the front, and 4 squares into a 2-by-2 panel for the back. Whipstitch with Cream, right sides facing out.

2. Sides and bottom: Whipstitch one square to each side edge of the front panel, then whipstitch the back panel to the other edges of the side squares. Whipstitch the last square across the bottom.

3. Top edge: Join Leaf Green at the top edge, chain 1, SC evenly around the entire opening (about 76 SC), join.

Round 2: chain 1, SC in each stitch, join. Fasten off.

Straps (make 2)

With Leaf Green, chain 90.

Row 1: SC in second chain from hook and each chain across. (89 SC)

Rows 2–3: Chain 1, SC in each stitch across, turn. (89 SC)

Fasten off, leaving long tails. Sew one strap to the front top edge and one to the back, anchoring each end over 2 inches of the edge with sturdy whipstitches.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Cotton yarn is non-negotiable for a tote — it holds its shape under groceries. Acrylic stretches, and a saggy tote is a sad tote.
  • Weave in your ends as you finish each square. Eleven squares times four color changes is a LOT of ends to face at the end. Ask me how I know.
  • For extra sturdiness, work the top edge rounds and straps in a doubled strand. It makes a real difference when the bag is full.

Go fill it with flowers — or farmers market veggies, or library books. It carries it all!
