# Monochrome Minimalist Jellyfish Free Crochet Pattern
Sometimes the simplest makes are the most striking. This little jellyfish is just black and white — no fussy color changes, no complicated shaping — and yet everyone who sees it wants to pick it up. I hung mine from a bookshelf and it genuinely looks like modern art.
The dome is basic amigurumi increases and decreases, the tentacles are a mix of curly spirals and straight strands, and the face is just a few embroidered stitches. It works up in an evening, which makes it dangerously giftable. I’ve made five. I have no regrets.

The Pattern
Dome
Worked in continuous rounds with white. Place a marker in the first st of each round.

Round 1: Magic ring, 6 SC into ring. (6)
Round 2: 2 SC in each st. (12)
Round 3: [SC in next, 2 SC in next] 6 times. (18)
Round 4: [SC in next 2, 2 SC in next] 6 times. (24)
Round 5: [SC in next 3, 2 SC in next] 6 times. (30)
Round 6: [SC in next 4, 2 SC in next] 6 times. (36)
Rounds 7-12: SC in each st. (36)
Round 13: [SC in next 4, SC2tog] 6 times. (30)
Round 14: [SC in next 3, SC2tog] 6 times. (24)
Round 15: [SC in next 2, SC2tog] 6 times. (18)
Stuff the dome firmly.
Round 16: [SC in next, SC2tog] 6 times. (12)
Round 17: [SC2tog] 6 times. (6)
Fasten off, thread the tail through the remaining sts, and pull closed.
Scalloped Rim
With black, join with a sl st to any stitch at the bottom edge of the dome (Round 12 area).
Round: Ch 1, [skip 1 st, 5 DC in next st, skip 1 st, SC in next st] 9 times around, join. Fasten off. (9 scallops)
Tentacles
Long curly tentacles (make 4, black): Ch 40, 2 SC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across — the strip will spiral naturally. Fasten off, leaving a tail.
Short straight tentacles (make 4, white): Ch 25, SC in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Fasten off, leaving a tail.
Sew the tentacles evenly around the underside of the dome, alternating long black curls and short white strands.
Face and Hanging Loop
With black yarn, embroider two small curved eyes (like little smiling closed eyes) and a tiny smile on the front of the dome. Keep it minimal — that’s the whole charm.
Hanging loop: With black, ch 20, sl st to form a ring, fasten off, and sew to the top of the dome.
Sophie’s Tips
- Stuff the dome firmly before Round 16 — a nicely rounded dome is what gives this jellyfish its polished, modern look.
- The curly tentacles need those 2 SC in every chain — don’t skip, or the spiral won’t form.
- Make a whole drifting bloom in different sizes by stopping the dome increases a round or two early for babies.
Float on, little friend!
