Ocean Blue Baby Dress Free Crochet Pattern

Ocean blue baby dress

# Ocean Blue Baby Dress Free Crochet Pattern

Some baby clothes are cute; this one is timeless. Deep ocean blue with a crisp white yoke — it looks like a tiny sailor dress from a storybook, and the wave stitch skirt gives it the loveliest texture. I made it for a beach-themed baby shower (the mom cried happy tears), but honestly it works for any occasion that calls for an extra-darling baby.

Top-down construction means you can check the fit as you go, and the wave stitch is just double crochet worked in a simple repeat. Classic never goes out of style.

Blue baby dress flat lay

I used soft cotton in ocean blue and white — breathable, washable, and the colors stay true wash after wash.

  • Size G-6 (4.0 mm) crochet hook

The Pattern

Yoke (white)

With white, Ch 50.

Row 1: DC in the 4th chain from the hook and in each chain across, Ch 2, turn. (48 DC)

Row 2 (increase): *DC in the next 5 stitches, 2 DC in the next stitch,* repeat across, Ch 2, turn. (56 DC)

Rows 3–4: DC in each stitch across, Ch 2, turn. (56 DC)

Row 5: Join to work in the round with a slip stitch.

Round 5 (divide): Ch 2, DC in the next 8 (front), skip 12 (sleeve), DC in the next 20 (back), skip 12 (sleeve), DC in the next 8 (front), join. (36 DC)

Round 6: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around, join. Fasten off white. (36 SC)

Wave Skirt (ocean blue)

Join ocean blue.

Round 7: Ch 3 (counts as DC), work 2 DC in the same stitch, *skip 2 stitches, SC in the next stitch, skip 2 stitches, work 5 DC in the next stitch (shell),* repeat around, join to the top of the beginning Ch 3.

Check the math: 36 stitches around. Each repeat uses 6 stitches (skip 2 + SC 1 + skip 2 + shell in 1 = 6). 36 ÷ 6 = 6 repeats. 6 shells per round.

Rounds 8–14: Slip stitch to the center of the first shell. Ch 3, work 2 DC in the same stitch, *SC in the center SC between shells, work 5 DC in the center of the next shell,* repeat around, join. (6 shells per round)

Round 15: Ch 1, SC in each stitch around (work 1 SC per DC and 1 SC per SC — about 36 SC), join. Fasten off.

Sew two white buttons at the back yoke.

Sleeve Edging

Join white at any underarm. Work 1 round of SC evenly around each armhole (about 26 SC each). Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.

Sophie’s Tips

  • The wave stitch looks complicated but it’s just shells and single crochets — count to 6 repeats and you’re golden.
  • White yokes show everything, so weave those ends in extra carefully.
  • This dress in navy with a cream yoke is equally classic — the pattern loves color swaps.
