Mustard Yellow Hooded Baby Jacket Free Crochet Pattern

Mustard jacket showing hood and raglan yoke

# Mustard Yellow Hooded Baby Jacket Free Crochet Pattern

Mustard yellow might just be the happiest color in my yarn stash, and on a cozy little hooded jacket it’s pure sunshine. I designed this one for crisp autumn walks and chilly morning stroller rides — it’s worked in half double crochet so it’s warm and dense, with a roomy hood and the cutest ribbed cuffs.

The construction is a top-down raglan, which means no seams to sew and you can try it on your little model (or a willing teddy bear) as you go. The hood is picked up right from the neckline and worked back and forth, then folded and seamed — easy peasy. I added wooden-look buttons, but any buttons you love will do.

Row 2: HDC in next 8 sts, (HDC, ch 2, HDC) in marked st, HDC in next 10 sts, (HDC, ch 2, HDC) in marked st, HDC in next 14 sts, (HDC, ch 2, HDC) in marked st, HDC in next 10 sts, (HDC, ch 2, HDC) in marked st, HDC in last 8 sts, ch 2, turn. (58 HDC)

Rows 3–8: HDC in each st to the ch-2 space, (HDC, ch 2, HDC) in each ch-2 space, HDC to end, ch 2, turn. Each row adds 8 HDC. After Row 8 you have 106 HDC: 15 front, 24 sleeve, 28 back, 24 sleeve, 15 front.

Divide for Body and Sleeves

Row 9: HDC across first 15 sts (right front), ch 6, skip next 24 sts (sleeve), HDC across next 28 sts (back), ch 6, skip next 24 sts (sleeve), HDC across last 15 sts (left front), ch 2, turn. (70 HDC)

Body

Rows 10–21: HDC in each st across, ch 2, turn. (70 HDC, 12 rows)

Rows 22–24 (ribbed hem): Ch 2, *FPDC in next st, BPDC in next st;* repeat across, ch 2, turn. (70 sts) Fasten off.

Front Bands

Join yarn at the bottom of the right front edge. Work 3 rows of HDC evenly up the edge (about 30 HDC per row). On the left front band, work Row 2 as: HDC across, working (ch 2, skip 1 st) 4 times evenly spaced for buttonholes. Fasten off and sew buttons opposite the buttonholes.

Sleeves (make 2)

Join yarn at an underarm chain. Work 30 HDC evenly around the armhole (24 sleeve sts + 6 underarm chains), join with a slip st.

Rounds 2–9: Ch 2, HDC in each st around, join. (30 HDC)

Rounds 10–11: Ch 2, *FPDC in next st, BPDC in next st;* repeat around, join. (30 sts) Fasten off.

Hood

With the right side facing, join yarn at the right front neck edge. Work 36 HDC evenly across the back neck (skip the first 11 sts of the right front and leave the last 11 sts of the left front unworked — these form the front opening).

Rows 2–10: Ch 2, HDC in each st across, turn. (36 HDC)

Fold the hood in half with right sides together and slip stitch or whipstitch the top seam closed. Turn right side out.

Face edging: Join yarn at one bottom corner of the hood opening and work 1 row of SC evenly around the opening. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. The jacket is nice and stretchy thanks to the HDC fabric — no blocking needed, just give it a gentle steam if you like.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Mustard yellow can vary a lot between dye lots, so buy all three skeins at once — future-you will be grateful.
  • If the hood looks a little pointy after seaming, just round it with your hands and let it relax — the HDC fabric softens right up.
  • This jacket looks adorable in rust, forest green, or dusty rose too — the pattern is a great basic to make in every color.

Bundle up your little pumpkin — autumn adventures await!
