# Mint Bunny Baby Cocoon Free Crochet Pattern
Some babies arrive and immediately make it clear they run the house. This little mint bunny cocoon is for them. It’s a soft swaddle sack with long floppy bunny ears and a fluffy tail on the back — basically the cutest thing I have ever taken off my hook, and I do not say that lightly.
Cocoons are wonderful first projects because there’s no shaping to stress over: you crochet a rounded base, then cruise straight up in half double crochet until it’s long enough. The ears are simple tapered rectangles, the tail is a tiny stuffed ball, and the whole thing works up in a weekend. Newborns live in these things, so make two — one to wear, one in the wash. Ask me how I know.

What You’ll Need
- Worsted weight yarn (category 4) — soft and machine washable:
- Mint green: approximately 350 yards (cocoon and ears)
- White: approximately 40 yards (tail and ear lining)
- Small amount of pink (inner ear)
- H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Small amount of polyester fiberfill (for the tail)
- Stitch markers, scissors
Finished size:
- Approximately 9 inches wide x 19 inches long
- Fits newborns 0–3 months
Gauge:
- 14 half double crochet x 10 rows = 4 inches. For a cocoon, close enough is fine — babies grow fast anyway

The Pattern
Cocoon Base
Worked in continuous rounds from the center out. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round.
Rnd 1: Magic ring, 8 sc into ring, pull tight. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: (Sc 1, inc) around. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: (Sc 2, inc) around. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: (Sc 3, inc) around. (40 sts)
Rnd 6: (Sc 9, inc) 4 times. (44 sts)
Cocoon Body
Rnds 7–48: Hdc in each st around. (44 sts)
Work straight with no increases — this is the lovely mindless middle. Your cocoon should measure about 17 inches from the base at this point.
Rnd 49: Sc in each st around. (44 sts)
Rnd 50 (scallop edging): (Sk 1 st, 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st, sl st in next st) around. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Bunny Ears (Make 2)
With mint yarn:
Row 1: Ch 12. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (11 sc)
Rows 2–14: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (11 sc)
Row 15: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (9 sc)
Row 16: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (9 sc)
Row 17: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (7 sc)
Row 18: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (5 sc)
Row 19: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog. Turn. (3 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Inner ear (make 2): With pink yarn, ch 8. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (7 sc). Work 8 rows of sc, then decrease: (sc2tog, sc 3, sc2tog) for 2 rows, then (sc2tog, sc, sc2tog). Fasten off. Sew the pink inner ear centered on each mint ear.
Fold the base of each ear slightly and sew the ears to the front top edge of the cocoon, about 3 inches apart.
Bunny Tail
With white yarn:
Rnd 1: Magic ring, 6 sc into ring. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnds 3–4: Sc in each st around. (12 sts)
Rnd 5: Dec around. (6 sts)
Stuff firmly with fiberfill, thread the tail through the remaining stitches, and pull closed. Sew the tail to the back of the cocoon, centered, about 5 inches up from the base.
Sophie’s Tips
- Soft yarn matters here — this sits against newborn skin, so pick something labeled baby-soft and machine washable.
- The scalloped edging looks fancy but it’s just one round. Don’t skip it; it finishes the whole cocoon.
- Make the ears a little floppy on purpose — perky ears are for older bunnies.
Hoppy crocheting, friend — this one’s a guaranteed baby-shower showstopper.
