# Holiday Photo Op Dress and Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Holiday photo op dress and hat

Every family has That Photo — the one that goes on the Christmas card, the one grandma frames. This is the dress for That Photo. I designed it to be worked back and forth in rows, all in one piece from top to bottom, so there is almost no seaming and nothing to interrupt your holiday movie marathon.

Your little angel gets a twirly red skirt with a scalloped hem, a matching hat with the fluffiest brim, and just enough holly-and-berry applique to make the camera fall in love.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in Christmas red (about 350 yards), white (about 100 yards), and a small amount of green
  • Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • 3 small buttons
  • Tapestry needle

Finished size: Chest 24″, length 22″ (size 4T). Hat fits head circumference 19–20″.

Front Trim and Buttons

Join white yarn at the bottom of one front edge. Sc evenly up the edge, across the neckline, and down the other edge. Fasten off. Sew 3 buttons down one front edge as decoration.

Holly Applique

With green, make 2 leaves: chain 8, sc in 2nd ch, hdc in next, dc in next 3, hdc in next, sc in last, then work back down the other side of the chain mirroring the stitches. Fasten off. With red, make 3 berries: magic ring, 6 sc, join. Sew the leaves and berries in a little cluster on the bodice.

Matching Hat

With red, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join. (6 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sc)

Round 3: Ch 1, *(sc in next st, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (18 sc)

Round 4: Ch 1, *(sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (24 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, *(sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (30 sc)

Round 6: Ch 1, *(sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (36 sc)

Rounds 7–12: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (36 sc)

Switch to white. Rounds 13–15: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (36 sc) Fasten off and weave in ends. Sew a white pompom to the tip.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Because the dress is worked flat, try it against your little one as you go — Row 20 is the perfect moment to check the length.
  • Keep the white trim yarn from the same dye family as the red so the whites match between the dress and the hat brim.
  • Steam the scalloped hem lightly and it will twirl like a dream in photos.

Smile big, little angel — this Christmas card is going to be perfect!
