Infant Santa suit and hat flat lay

If there is one thing I believe with my whole heart, it is that every baby deserves a Santa suit photo. This little overall-style suit is exactly what I would put my own tiny human in — soft red, fluffy white trim, and a hat with the floppiest little brim. It is warm, it is jolly, and it photographs like an absolute dream.

The pattern is written for 0–3 months below, with simple size notes for 3–6, 6–12, and 12–18 months, so the whole nursery crew can match.

What You’ll Need

  • Worsted-weight yarn in red (about 250 yards) and white (about 100 yards)
  • Size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook
  • 2 small buttons
  • Tapestry needle

Finished size: 0–3 months: chest 17″, inseam 6″. See size notes at the end for bigger sizes.

The Pattern

Legs

Leg 1: Join red yarn in the first st of Round 12. Ch 1, sc in sts 1–28, join to first sc. (28 sc)

Top Trim

Join white yarn at the top edge of the suit body. Rounds 1–2: Ch 1, sc in each of the 56 sts around, join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Straps (make 2)

With white, chain 26. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. (25 sc) Work 1 more row of sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Sew one strap to each side of the front top edge, and sew a button on the back top edge under each strap.

Santa Hat

With red, make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 6 sc into ring, join. (6 sc)

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12 sc)

Round 3: Ch 1, *(sc in next st, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (18 sc)

Round 4: Ch 1, *(sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (24 sc)

Round 5: Ch 1, *(sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (30 sc)

Round 6: Ch 1, *(sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st)* around, join. (36 sc)

Rounds 7–11: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (36 sc)

Switch to white. Rounds 12–14: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join. (36 sc) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Make a white pompom and sew it firmly to the tip of the hat.

Sophie’s Tips

  • Use a soft, washable acrylic — this suit will be loved hard and photographed harder, and it needs to survive the laundry.
  • Sew the buttons on with embroidery floss doubled, and check them before every wear. Tiny hands find everything.
  • Make the hat first as a warm-up; it takes under an hour and you will be hooked enough to finish the suit.

Ho ho ho, little one — you are the cutest gift under the tree!
